It is a good morning exercise for a research scientist to discard a pet hypothesis every day before breakfast.  It keeps him young.

Welcome to science for the non-scientist.

Humans are curious by nature.  Kids have no problem indulging their inner scientist by asking questions all the time… about bugs, rocket ships, dinosaurs, blood, stars, giraffes, etc., etc.  As adults, we still have that sense of curiosity, even though the topics may have changed.  But without regular access to the science teacher, we just don’t have many occasions to ask our questions of people who know the answers.

The Illinois Science Council is an independent nonprofit organization keeping alive the great human fascination with science.  We develop casual events – for adults – that bring scientists and engineers face to face with people who want to cultivate their innate curiosity about science.

Our mission is to help the general public understand and appreciate the work of Albert Einstein and Carl Sagan, and other great (living!) scientists, some right here in our own back yard.  Illinois, and particularly the Chicago region, is home to an extraordinary number of science-based institutions – universities, museums, corporations, zoos, medical centers and national laboratories – engaged in cutting-edge scientific work every day.  The Illinois Science Council creates opportunities for those scientists to talk about their work and to answer many, many questions from us non-scientist “lay” people.  And we make sure our topics, our presenters, and our venues are “adult friendly.”

ISC is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.  We receive guidance from members of the research, academic and professional communities, and we benefit from the terrific contributions of many volunteers.

ISC is continually developing collaborative relationships with academic institutions, companies and other nonprofit entities that share and support the goal of enhancing public understanding and appreciation of science and technology.  If you know of a program, project or organization that you think we should know about, please contact us at Info <at> IllinoisScience.org.
