Humans are curious by nature. We act like scientists all the time without realizing it.
As kids, we wondered why the sky is blue, what makes airplanes fly, and how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. As adults, we haven’t really lost our sense of curiosity; we’re just out of practice. After leaving the classroom, we don’t have many opportunities to have our questions answered by experts.
Also, our questions have changed to things like:
Trouble is, once beyond high school or college, our opportunities for exploring scientific ideas with actual practitioners are rare. Magazines and TV shows can be good, but you can’t ask questions. And science efforts aimed at children don’t always satisfy us either.
That’s the reason for the Illinois Science Council. We are an independent nonprofit organization that aims to keep alive the great human fascination with science. We develop casual events – for adults – that bring scientists and engineers face to face with people who want to cultivate their innate curiosity about science.
Just by visiting here, we can tell you’re an interested – and interesting – person.
