Illinois Congressional Candidates Answer Questions about Science Policy

A non-partisan coalition of national and Illinois science organizations prepared a questionnaire for all Illinois Congressional candidates asking for their views on pressing issues of public concern in areas of science policy, including dealing with the pandemic, climate change, energy, environment and several others.

A number of candidates responded to the questionnaire and their answers can be found here. We strongly encourage constituents to consider candidates’ positions on these important issues, whether stated in response to our questionnaire or elsewhere, when deciding how to vote.

The coalition that organized this effort includes two Chicago-based organizations: the Chicago Council on Science and Technology (C2ST), and Illinois Science Council; two national science policy organizations: Science Debate,  and the National Science Policy Network (NSPN); and three graduate student organizations affiliated with NSPN from Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois.

Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024

On April 8th, 2024, a total solar eclipse will sweep across North America, from Mexico to the Maine-Canadian border. For those who experienced the spectacular solar eclipse of 2017, this one will be similar, crossing the United States from west to east and passing through or near several major metropolitan areas. And while its path is quite different this time, Carbondale, Illinois, a reasonable destination for Chicago-area residents, will once again be on the line of totality.    

Just a little background on eclipses:  Lunar and solar eclipses are not uncommon – they each occur about twice a year when the moon is crossing the ecliptic, the path of the sun in the sky.
