SUMMARY:Pi Day "Pi K" Fun Run 2021 - Irrational\, Non-repeating and with Trivia! - 2021-03-14
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 vaccines are being distributed\, which is FANTASTIC! But\, it’s still too risky for us to get together for ISC’s annual 3.14-mile “Pi K” Run followed by Trivia & Pie Party. BUT WE WON’T LET A STUPID VIRUS STOP US FROM CELEBRATING PI DAY!!!!! Here’s the plan: \n1. REGISTER:\nAll registrants receive this year’s awesome Pi K t-shirt they can wear proudly to show their respect for math and support of science outreach. Register until midnight on March 14 at http://PiDayRun.org to get this year’s awesome PiK t-shirt delivered directly to your door. \nHelp us raise even more awareness of the importance of science by registering for Charity Bib. Engage your friends and family in fundraising in support of science outreach. Raise $314 and your registration fee is waived! To do so you don’t register through eventbrite\, but must register through the Charity Bib page: https://bit.ly/PiDayCharityRun. \n2. “RUN” 3.14 something: \nSometime before afternoon on March 14\, you should run\, walk\, skip\, cartwheel\, or saunter 3.14 miles\, which is a little more than a 5K. (It’s the honor system. We won’t know if you spent 3.14 hours on your couch.) You can also go 3.14 kilometers\, furlongs\, acres\, leagues\, or city blocks if you choose. \n3. PLAY TRIVIA: \nThe first 200 people who register on Eventbrite or Charity Bib will be sent a Zoom link the morning of March 14 to join us online at 3:14pm (pi/pi ) that afternoon\, or 6:28pm (2pi-pi ) that evening. Everyone must register for only one trivia session; prizes are the same for both. \nWe’ll use the Kahoot platform for trivia. ISC’s Game Master will share the question screen\, and players use their own phones (or an alternate tab on a computer) to select answers. You’ll toggle to Kahoot.it or open the Kahoot app on your phone\, and enter the Game PIN once it’s on the screen. If you haven’t used Kahoot before\, you can download it prior to the 14th. It’s not necessary to use the app\, but some find it easier than switching between tabs on your computer. \n4. PRIZES: \nOne Trivia Winner for each session will receive their choice of a t-shirt or mask from ISC’s Science Swag Store! Check out the goods at https://bit.ly/ISCscienceswag. \nCreative Route – if you use a running app that maps your route (e.g.\, Strava\, MapMyRun\, etc.)\, we’ll award a winner of the most creative route related to pi\, pie\, or math their choice of a t-shirt or mask from ISC’s Science Swag Store! To be eligible\, you must submit your route to PiDay@IllinoisScience.org with the subject line “Route Contest” no later than 12:00noon (CT) Sunday\, March 14. Entries will judged by ISC’s volunteer Pi Day committee who are generous geniuses and so their decision is final. \n—————————————————————————– \nAll proceeds support the STEM outreach efforts of Illinois Science Council\, an independent 501c3 nonprofit based in Chicago that offers creative and engaging science programs for teens and adults. \n\n2021 Pi K T-Shirt:\nThe 2021 Pi K t-shirt is a softstyle unisex cotton tee available in sizes XS – 2XL. The front logo is not some esoteric equation. It simply indicates this ia a “Pi K” as opposed to a 5K run\, and the exponent number indicates this year\, 2021\, is the 9th annual event. The back of the shirt gives a nod to the pandemic and virtual nature of this year’s event with an image of the COVID-19 virus replacing the decimal in 3.14. The “dividing line” between 3.14 and ISC’s logo is not a line at all; up close it’s a long sequence of digits of pi. \nSignificance of Pi: \nPi\, in case you don’t remember\, is abbreviated to 3.14 but continues indefinitely. To date\, it has been calculated by computer to over 1.2 trillion digits. Competitions exist for reciting the most digits by memory. As the world’s most famous mathematical constant\, Pi is important to many formulas used in mathematics\, science\, engineering and statistics.

SUMMARY:23 and YOU! The Human Genome and Consumer Genetic Testing - 2021-03-31
DESCRIPTION:Learn about amazing genetics advances since the Human Genome was mapped (20 years ago) and what consumer genetic testing means for you! \n  \nIt’s been 20 years since the groundbreaking science advancement of mapping the human genome. What is a genome\, anyway? What changes in science\, technology and society were spawned by the project? \nISC is excited to host Dr. Jeffery Schloss\, a former Division Director at NIH in the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). He’ll tell us about how things have changed and some things worth knowing about the human genome. He will answer questions like: \n\nWhy does genetic research matter to those of us who are not biologists or geneticists?\n\n\nWhat is important to know about the popular “recreational” genetic tests anyone can buy\, like 23andMe or AncestryDNA?\n\n\nAnd your questions too!\n\n  \nWednesday\, March 31 \n6:00pm – 7:15pm (CT) \nSpace is limited. To receive Zoom link\, register today. \nSuggested donation: $10 \n\nJeffery A. Schloss\, Ph.D.\, is experienced in leading programs to develop and implement genomic technologies. He was most recently Director\, Division of Genome Sciences\, Extramural Research Program\, National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)\, U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)\, where he supervised the scientists who were responsible for well-known\, productive programs such as NHGRI’s Genome Sequencing Program\, ENCODE\, 1000 Genomes\, $1\,000 Genome Technology program\, and much of NHGRI’s informatics program\, and NIH Common Fund programs including KOMP\, LINCS\, H3Africa\, Protein Capture\, and the Human Microbiome Program. \nEarlier\, as Program Director at NHGRI\, Schloss developed and implemented the program to develop technologies to sequence human genomes at a cost of $1\,000\, and the Centers of Excellence in Genomic Science; in the early days of the Human Genome Project (HGP) he managed grants to centers that were building human and model organism physical and genetic maps\, and helped initiate the scale-up to HGP sequencing. Schloss served on trans-NIH and trans-federal-agency programs including the NIH Bioengineering Consortium and the National Nanotechnology Initiative. He was previously on the biology faculty at the University of Kentucky after a postdoc in the biology department at Yale University\, having earned the PhD degree in cell biology at Carnegie Mellon University and BA in biology at Case Western Reserve University.

SUMMARY:Your Brain on Happiness - 2021-04-27
DESCRIPTION:This will be a fascinating program on brain research on happiness (and other emotions)\, how to change your brain\, and how the brain changes your health.\nRegister for zoom link here. \nWe all know how different it feels to be happy – or otherwise – and it’s all in your head. In your brain\, that is.Our gray matter is obviously quite emotional – highs\, lows\, and everything in between. Sometimes the change in mindset happens surprisingly quickly. \n\n\n\nGiven the incredible recent advancements in studying the brain\, have researchers found a happiness region in the brain? \nCan you actually change your brain to make yourself happier? How?!? \nCan mediation actually fundamentally change the brain? \n\nRobin Nusslock\, PhD\, Associate Professor of Psychology Neuroscience at Northwestern University\, will explain how happiness affects physical health\, and what’s happening when happiness goes awry and turns to depression or addiction. \nIf we’re lucky\, Dr. Nusslock will tell us about psychoneuroimmunology and how that research relates to COVID-19. Then you can knowledgeably drop that term in casual conversation to wow people with the size of your brain! \nWe’ll allow plenty of time for Q&A so join us for what will certainly be an enlightening conversation! \nSpace is limited. To receive Zoom link\, register today!\nhttps://BrainOnHappiness.eventbrite.com\nFree with suggested donation $10 \nDr. Robin Nusslock is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Northwestern University\, where he serves as Director of the Affective & Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory. His research examines how the brain creates emotion and how stress gets under the skin to affect people’s mental and physical health. Nusslock has published over seventy scientific articles and book chapters on the neuroscience of emotion and health and his work has been featured in both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n@RobinNusslock

SUMMARY:ISC and City Nature Challenge: West Ridge Nature Park
DESCRIPTION:Illinois Science Council is joining the 2021 City Nature Challenge!\nCome join us at our first IN PERSON event in over a year! This species observation spree is entirely outdoors and socially distanced\, but masks will be required. A great opportunity to get out to enjoy nature and learn something too!  \nThe City Nature Challenge is a 4-day bioblitz organized by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Cities around the world try to collect the most species observations over the course of the event. Anyone can participate on their own\, but if you’d like to meet new people while you look at plants\, fungi\, insects\, and animals\, ISC is organizing groups at TWO locations in Chicago:  West Ridge Natural Area and Northerly Island. This page is for the WEST RIDGE NATURE PARK location. \nCity Nature Challenge logs species observed and recorded in iNaturalist\, a smart phone app for taking geotagged photographs of organisms that then crowdsources identifications. You don’t need to be able to identify any plants or animals yourself — you only need your curiosity about nature and willingness to look at the world around you! \nWhat you need to participate: \n\nDownload the iNaturalist app on your smart phone\nWear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes\nWear sunscreen\, a hat\, or other sun protection\nFace mask for COVID-19 prevention\n\nHow to find us at WEST RIDGE NATURE PARK:  ISC representatives will be near the walk-in entrance for 15-20 min at 7:00 am and again at 9:00 am. From there\, we’ll spread out to make observations. \nMore information on the overall City Nature Challenge is available here: https://citynaturechallenge.org/ \nand about the Chicago-area plans from Chicago Wilderness here: https://www.chicagowilderness.org/page/citynaturechallenge

SUMMARY:ISC Trivia Night - 2021-09-30
DESCRIPTION:Aside from vaccines\, masks\, and safe distances\, the key things to help us deal with this pandemic are: \n\nEngage with other humans (preferably fun ones)\nKeep our brains active (you can only binge-watch so many shows)\nHumor (we can’t live sanely without it!)\n\nSo join fun-loving science fans of ISC for a Zoom Trivia Night! (it’s trivia ON zoom; not trivia ABOUT zoom.) We’re excited to tickle your brain with science-tinged factoids. You do not need to be a scientist to play — this event is for everybody! \nThe top two scorers will receive one of ISC’s new Chicago: City of Science “subway” t-shirts (see below). \nThis event is BYOWhatever because it happens inside *your* house!! \nThis program is brought to you by the science- (and fun-) lovers at Illinois Science Council\, a Chicago-based nonprofit. Please support ISC and our mission of public science outreach with a tax-deductible donation of any amount today. \n \nThe Zoom link will be emailed to you and we will use the Kahoot platform for trivia. ISC’s Game Master will share question screen and players use their own phones (or an alternate tab on a computer) to select answers. You’ll like it! \nIf you haven’t used the platform before\, you can download it prior to the evening. Toggle over to Kahoot.it\, or open the Kahoot app on your phone\, and enter the Game PIN once it’s on the screen. It’s not necessary to use the app\, but some find it easier than switching between tabs on your computer.

SUMMARY:CIERA 12th Annual Public Lecture by Dr. Phil Plait: "Strange New Worlds: Is Earth Special?"
DESCRIPTION:Northwestern University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA) Presents: \nThe CIERA 12th Annual Public Lecture \n— Free and open to the public.\n— Livestreamed via Zoom and YouTube!\n— All are welcome! Content tailored to a general audience.\n— Meet Northwestern astronomers after the lecture.\n— Due to Cahn Auditorium’s venue policies\, refreshments will not be available.\n— Campus parking lots are unrestricted in the evenings. \nDr. Phil Plait\nThe Bad Astronomer | Bio | Blog \nTalk Title: Strange New Worlds: Is Earth Special?\nEvent Description \nSince the 1990s\, astronomers have found over four thousand (and counting!) exoplanets\, alien worlds orbiting other stars. These planets orbit a wide variety of stars\, and themselves are all wildly different; huge\, small\, hot\, cold\, airless\, or with thick atmospheres. As we learn more about them\, we come closer to answering the Big Questions: Is there another Earth out there? And if so\, will it support life? Is Earth unique\, or is the galaxy filled with blue-green worlds that look achingly like our own? In this engaging and fun talk\, astronomer Phil Plait will show you how we find these planets\, and how our own compares to them. \nRegistration \nRegistration for the Public lecture will be handled through Eventbrite. While registration is only suggested\, and not mandatory\, priority will be given to registered attendees in the case of capacity restrictions. Registration for the event via Eventbrite can also confirm attendance to the Zoom Webinar\,  accessible via:  https://northwestern.zoom.us/j/97808049380 \nAn option to watch a livestream on YouTube will also be made available\, and will be posted on CIERA’s site October 11th. \nTo register click here \nTo receive updates about this and other CIERA Events\, please subscribe to our e-mail list.

SUMMARY:Revelations in Air - A Discussion on the Sense of Smell - 2021-10-27
DESCRIPTION:ISC is excited to offer this fun and interesting conversation with science writers Jude Stewart and Chris Kemp about our frequently under-appreciated sense of smell. \nOverlapping with taste yet larger in scope\, smell is the sense that comes closest to pure perception. Smell can collapse space and time\, unlocking memories and transporting us to worlds both new and familiar. Yet as clearly as each of us can recognize different smells — the bright tang of citrus\, freshly sharpened pencils\, parched earth after rain — few of us understand how and why we smell. \nJude Stewart will share her fascinating journey into the weird and wonderful world of smell that became her latest book\, “Revelations in Air: A Guidebook to Smell.” \nGuests will take their own scent-journey as easy experiments are demonstrated during the program. Register by Saturday\, Oct. 23 and you’ll be sent a list of items to have on hand to partake in the experiments to sniff-along with us. It will open your mind – to a new way of experiencing the world! \nWe’ll allow plenty of time for Q&A for what will certainly be an enlightening conversation! \nWednesday October 27\, 2021 6:30pm – 8:00pm (CT) \nTix: $0-$5 (limited free tickets available) \nSpace is limited. To receive Zoom link\, register today! \nhttps://OurNoseKnows.eventbrite.com \nThis program is in partnership with Seminary Co-op Bookstore. You can pre-order your copy of “Revelations in Air: A Guidebook to Smell” today! \n\n\nABOUT JUDE STEWART \nJude Stewart writes about design and culture for Slate\, the Believer\, Fast Company\, Design Observer and other publications. She is also a contributing editor at PRINT magazine. She is the author of ROY G. BIV (2013) and Patternalia\, (2015) and most recently Revelations in Air: A Guidebook to Smell. Stewart lives in Chicago. \nABOUT CHRISTOPHER KEMP \nChristopher Kemp is a molecular biologist. He’s written for Nature\, Science\, Outside\, and New Scientist\, and is the author of Floating Gold: A Natural (and Unnatural) History of Ambergris (2012)\, The Lost Species (2017)\, and the upcoming Dark and Magical Places: The Neuroscience of Navigation (2022). He lives in Michigan with his wife\, three sons\, and a dog.

SUMMARY:How to Survive & Thrive in a Pandemic using Narrative Medicine - 2022-01-24
DESCRIPTION:Survive and thrive in a pandemic with a 3-minute mental makeover used in medicine\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe ongoing burden of COVID-19 \, and just the January blahs\, can add to stress and anxiety for anyone. It’s especially challenging for healthcare workers who knew long before pandemics that patients and parents were extremely stressed out. However\, there is a strategy proven to help lower stress for patients\, parents\, and their practitioners\, and it can help anyone else too. \nDr. David Thoele\, a pediatric cardiologist at Advocate Children’s Hospital\, will share with us how mindfulness and meditation relate to the idea of ‘narrative medicine’ and how it helps ease stress. Dr. Thoele will walk us all through an easy 3-Minute Mental Makeover (3MMM) in this engaging talk. It can be helpful to any level of your mental state -– general malaise and languishing\, or serious stress and anxiety. \nPlease join us for an interactive lunchtime talk where you’ll learn how narrative medicine can lower your stress let you survive & thrive during a pandemic. It will only take an hour\, so well worth it! \nIt’s virtual\, so you can bring your own lunch and don’t have to share with anyone! You should have a pen and paper handy for the exercise. \nA Zoom link will be emailed to all who register in advance. \nWe look forward to seeing you! \n \nDavid G. Thoele\, MD is Co-Director of Narrative Medicine and a pediatric cardiologist at Advocate Children’s Hospital. He started the program in narrative medicine at ACH in 2013. He is a writer and speaker who has led writing workshops at The Examined Life Conference\, the International Health Humanities meeting\, and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). His creative essays are featured in Pulse\, Hektoen International\, Ars Medica\, and Physicians Practice. \nHe learned the healing power of writing when his daughter got sick and he experienced the medical system from a parent’s perspective. He developed a short writing exercise for doctors to use with their patients. He and his group published studies in The Permanente Journal that showed that the 3MMM reduced stress for patients\, families and health practitioners\, and led to long-term benefits (also presented at two Johns Hopkins ICU conferences). \nDr. David Thoele YouTube channel : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdKJZ6Vqi_iogTQLVza-c_A \nNarrative Medicine Webpage on the Advocate Children’s Hospital website\, please feel free to share and use this link when sharing information about our program: https://www.advocatechildrenshospital.com/health-resources/support-services/narrative-medicine \n  \n

SUMMARY:Emotional: How Feelings Shape Our Thinking with Leonard Mlodinow - 2022-02-10
DESCRIPTION:Renowned science writer Leonard Mlodinow will discuss his fascinating new book about how human emotions really drive everything we do.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou make hundreds of decisions every day\, from what to eat for breakfast to how you should invest\, and not one of those decisions would be possible without emotion. It has long been said that thinking and feeling are separate and opposing forces in our behavior. But as Leonard Mlodinow\, PhD\, explores in his latest book\, Emotional: How Feelings Shape Our Thinking\, extraordinary advances in psychology and neuroscience have proven that emotions are as critical to our well-being as thinking. \nHow can you connect better with others? How can you make sense of your frustration\, fear\, and anxiety? What can you do to live a happier life? The answers lie in understanding your emotions. Journeying from the labs of pioneering scientists to real-world scenarios that have flirted with disaster\, Mlodinow shows how our emotions can help\, why they sometimes hurt\, and what we can learn in both instances. \nPlease join us for what will certainly be at very interesting and valuable talk about something we think we’re familiar with — our emotions. \nEmotional is available from ISC’s partner in this event\, Seminary Co-op Bookstores. \nIt’s virtual\, so you can bring food & drink and don’t have to share with anyone! A Zoom link will be emailed to all who register in advance. \nWe look forward to seeing you! \n\n\n\nLEONARD MLODINOW received his PhD in theoretical physics from the University of California\, Berkeley\, was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute\, and was on the faculty of the California Institute of Technology. His previous books include the best sellers: The Grand Design and A Briefer History of Time (both with Stephen Hawking)\, Subliminal (winner of the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award)\, The Drunkard’s Walk\, and Elastic. \nAbout his latest book\, Emotional: How Feelings Shape Our Thinking: \nWe’ve all been told that thinking rationally is the key to success. But at the cutting edge of science\, researchers are discovering that feeling is every bit as important as thinking. Using deep insights into our evolution and biology\, Mlodinow gives us the tools to understand our emotions better and to maximize their benefits. Told with his characteristic clarity and fascinating stories\, Emotional explores the new science of feelings and offers us an essential guide to making the most of one of nature’s greatest gifts. \nAvailable from the Seminary Co-op Bookstore.

SUMMARY:"Emotional: How Feelings Shape Our Thinking" with Leonard Mlodinow

SUMMARY:Pi Day "Pi K" 3.14-mile fun run celebrating MATH!
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to improved covid numbers\, we’re super excited to be LIVE again for our 10th Annual Pi Day 3.14-mile Fun Run!! Three cheers for vaccines\, boosters\, and mask-wearers! Join us in-person on 3/14 at 6:28pm to run a 3.14 mile loop and socialize afterwards. If you’re not ready for people yet\, that’s okay\, you can select our virtual option. Here’s the plan: \n1. REGISTER at PiDayRun.org \nRegister EARLY (by midnight Thursday\, February 24) and we’ll get this year’s awesome PiK t-shirt delivered to you by March 14th to wear on Pi Day. \nRegister later (until midnight March 14) to have your collectible PiK t-shirt delivered after Pi Day. \nPi & Pie Fans anywhere can join this year — no need to come to Chicago! (There will be a small surcharge to ship t-shirts overseas. There’s math involved.) \nAll registrants receive this year’s awesome Pi K t-shirt they can wear proudly to show their respect for math and support of science outreach. \n2. “RUN” 3.14 something: \nIn Person: We’ll meet at the South Loop Fleet Feet Sports running store in Chicago on March 14. Be there and ready for the run start at 6:28pm CT (2 PI!!) We’ll have a 3.14-mile route mapped out for you and afterward we’ll have donuts to enjoy in celebration of everything circular. \nVirtual: You should run\, walk\, skip\, cartwheel\, or saunter 3.14 miles\, which is a little more than a 5K. (It’s the honor system. We won’t know if you spent 3.14 hours on your couch.) You can also go 3.14 kilometers\, furlongs\, acres\, leagues\, or city blocks if you choose\, where you choose! But make sure you are wearing your Pi K shirt\, and share your picture on our social media pages. \n—————————————————————————– \nThe Pi K Shirt:  \nThis year’s collectible tee is in hot pink!!  ISC’s 2022 Pi K Fun Run T-shirt is a softstyle unisex cotton tee in sizes XS – 2XL. \nThe logo on the front is not some esoteric equation. Rather\, it indicates this is a “Pi K” as opposed to a 5K run (a little extra for math)\, and the exponent number indicates this year\, 2022\, is the 10th(!!!!) annual run. \nThe back of the shirt gives a nod to the pandemic and celebration of vaccines with a syringe replacing the numeral 1 in 3.14. The “dividing line” between 3.14 and ISC’s logo is not a line at all. Up close you’ll notice it’s a long sequence of digits of pi. 🙂 \n \nAll proceeds support the STEM outreach efforts of Illinois Science Council\, an independent 501c3 nonprofit based in Chicago that offers creative and engaging science programs for teens and adults.

SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge — Online preview talk & training with “iNaturalist” app - 2022-04-25
DESCRIPTION:Join ISC to learn what the City Nature Challenge is about\, and how to use iNaturalist to make nature observations with your phone.\n  \nThe CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April. Cities around the U.S. and world are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal. Also which city gathers the most observations of nature\, finds the most species\, and engages the most people in the event.\n\nISC is pleased to present a virtual presentation in advance of Chicago’s City Nature Challenge. You’ll hear from two of our Associates\, Liz Lux and Michael Sherillo\, detailing the history of the challenge and how it works\, how to use the iNaturalist app to participate on the weekend\, and what organisms you might find in your urban environment.\n\nTo be guaranteed a spot\, register HERE:  All registrants will be emailed a Zoom link to join the presentation. We’ll have plenty of time for questions and discussion with the presenters.\n\n\nThen you can take the knowledge learned and join Liz in person at Chicago’s West Ridge Nature Park on Saturday morning\, April 30\, 10am-12noon to make observations of the flora and fauna you see! No need to register to join the walk at West Ridge Nature Park — just show up! We’ll gather near the entrance at 10am and be there until about noon.\n\nCan’t make it to that location? That’s okay. You can head out into ANY nature near you all weekend to participate. It’s easy and a fun way to engage with nature when you’re in a large city! Anyone\, anywhere can search for wild plants\, animals\, and other creatures between April 29th and May 2nd to see how many species you can find and show the world how diverse our Chicago region is. Add your observations to iNaturalist and they’ll automatically be included in the CNC project for Chicago.
