SUMMARY:ID Birds & Bees with ISC!
DESCRIPTION:Get back to nature with the City Nature Challenge\nISC is excited to present an Identification Social for the global event “City Nature Challenge.” We’ll gather at Metropolitan Brewery with other citizen scientists\, get a quick tutorial on how to use iNaturalist\, and then hang out enjoying the local brew while marking observations that occurred over the past weekend. \nBring your own laptop or device to work on!  Metropolitan is family and dog friendly\, with gluten-free and NA options. \nCan’t make it that evening? That’s okay. You can head out into ANY nature near you the previous weekend to participate. It’s easy and a fun way to engage with nature when you’re in a large city! Anyone\, anywhere can search for wild plants\, animals\, and other creatures between April 28th and May 1st to see how many species you can find and show the world how diverse our Chicago region is. Add your observations to iNaturalist and they’ll automatically be included in the project. Happy exploring! \nAbout the City Nature Challenge:\nStarted in 2016 as a competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles\, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event\, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their cities. The CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April\, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see not only what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal\, but also which city can gather the most observations of nature\, find the most species\, and engage the most people in the event.

SUMMARY:"The Day We Found the Universe" - CIERA Annual Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Northwestern University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA) Presents: THE CIERA 15th ANNUAL PUBLIC LECTURE \nBy Marcia Bartusiak \nTalk Title: The Day We Found the Universe: A Centenary Celebration \nIn October 1923\, one hundred years ago\, Edwin Hubble took a historic astronomical photograph that ultimately established that our universe was filled with myriad galaxies just like our own. It was a realization that reshaped how humans understood their place in the cosmos. Six years later\, continuing research by Hubble and others forced Albert Einstein to renounce his own cosmic model and finally accept the astonishing fact that the universe was not at rest but instead expanding. The story of these discoveries includes battles of will\, clever insights\, and wrong turns made by the early investigators in this great twentieth-century pursuit\, from the luminaries (Einstein\, Hubble\, Harlow Shapley) to the lesser known (such as Henrietta Leavitt\, who discovered the means to measure the vast dimensions of the cosmos\, and Vesto Slipher\, the first and unheralded discoverer of the universe’s expansion). Award-winning science author\, and Professor of the Practice Emeritus\, Marcia Bartusiak will recount these watershed moments in our cosmic history\, describing how Hubble’s triumph was not his alone but was achieved by his standing on the shoulders of many before him. \nAbout the Presenter: \nCombining her skills as a journalist with an advanced degree in physics\, Marcia Bartusiak (pronounced Mar-sha Bar-too’-shack) has been covering the fields of astronomy and physics for four decades. The author of seven books\, she is Professor of the Practice Emeritus in the Graduate Program in Science Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Some of her books include The Day We Found the Universe\, a narrative saga of the birth of modern cosmology and the 2010 winner of the History of Science Society’s Davis Prize\, Dispatches from Planet 3\, an essay collection for the armchair astronomer\, and now-updated Einstein’s Unfinished Symphony\, her award-winning history of gravitational-wave astronomy and its first detections. \nFor many years\, Marcia was a contributing editor at Discover. she is now on the editorial advisory board of Astronomy magazine. She also reviews science books for The Washington Post and Wall Street Journal. \nAbout this Talk: \n— Free and open to the public.\n— All are welcome! Content tailored to a general audience.\n— Meet Northwestern astronomers after the lecture.\n— Campus parking lots are free and unrestricted in the evenings. \nReserve a seat here: eventbrite.com/e/ciera-annual-public-lecture-the-day-we-found-the-universe-tickets-706293241097?aff=oddtdtcreator \nFor those unable to make it to Evanston\, the lecture will be livestreamed on CIERA’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/7mB23RFlowc?si=0pTr3GdmyREKzjUp  \n(backup livestream link via Panopto) \nThe Lecture is made possible with support from The Alumnae of Northwestern University

SUMMARY:Science Comedian Ben Miller @ Lincoln Lodge
DESCRIPTION:Stand-Up Science Presents: Volcano\n\n\n\n\nAn hour of volcano jokes from NYC based scientist turned stand-up comedian Ben Miller. \n\n\n  \n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat happens when a comedian walks into a volcano? \nIn 2023\, Ben Miller was the artist in residence at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park\, the first ever stand-up comedian ever selected. This was probably a terrible idea on their part. \nCome watch this show where scientist turned stand-up comedian Ben Miller explores volcanology\, entomology\, Hawaiian history\, cats\, cookies\, and more. And yes that photo is real. Ben has made people laugh in front of a burning lava lake and he is not afraid of you. \nBen Miller is an NYC based scientist turned comedian who has been working for the past 7 years. In that time\, he has performed at all the top clubs in the city such as Broadway Comedy Club\, Carolines\, and The Stand. Ben was once ranked as the top roast battler in NYC. He has a degree in Materials Science and Engineering\, worked on a science bus\, 3D printed cookies and has diffused a few bar fights while on stage. In 2022\, Ben Miller’s debut hour\, Stand-Up Science\, had a completely sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and he now tours internationally. \nThis show is recommended for ages 18+. Student discount available upon request. \nThursday\, April 18\, 2024 \n7:30 – 9:00pm \nLincoln Lodge\, 2040 N Milwaukee Av.\, Chicago (map) \nTickets: $15 HERE \n\n\n\nNote: this is not produced by IL Science Council. DESCRIPTION:Get back to nature with the City Nature Challenge\nISC welcomes you to join us for an “Identification Social Night” for the global event City Nature Challenge. We’ll gather at District Brew Yards with other citizen scientists\, get a quick tutorial on how to use the great iNaturalist app\, and then hang out enjoying the local brew while marking observations that occurred over the past weekend. \nBring your own laptop or device to work on! \nCan’t make it that evening? That’s okay. You can head out into ANY nature near you the previous weekend to participate. It’s really easy and a fun way to engage with nature when you’re in a large city! Anyone\, anywhere can search for wild plants\, animals\, and other creatures between April 26-29th. Just add your observations to iNaturalist and they’ll automatically be included in the project. See how many species you can find and show the world how diverse our Chicago region is! \nHappy exploring!

SUMMARY:"Eve: How The Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution" with author Cat Bohannon
DESCRIPTION:Please join ISC & the Chicago Public Library on Monday evening\, May 13th\, for what will most certainly be a very interesting conversation with Cat Bohannon\, PhD\, author of “Eve: How The Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution.” \nHow did the female body drive 200 million years of human evolution? • Why do women live longer than men? • Why are women more likely to get Alzheimer’s? • Why do girls score better at every academic subject than boys until puberty\, when suddenly their scores plummet? • Is sexism useful for evolution? • And why\, seriously why\, do women have to sweat through our sheets every night when we hit menopause?\n \nThese questions are producing some truly exciting science – and in Eve\, with boundless curiosity and sharp wit\, Cat Bohannon covers the past 200 million years to explain the specific science behind the development of the female sex: “We need a kind of user’s manual for the female mammal. A no-nonsense\, hard-hitting\, seriously researched (but readable) account of what we are. How female bodies evolved\, how they work\, what it really means to biologically be a woman. Something that would rewrite the story of womanhood. This book is that story. We have to put the female body in the picture. If we don’t\, it’s not just feminism that’s compromised. Modern medicine\, neurobiology\, paleoanthropology\, even evolutionary biology all take a hit when we ignore the fact that half of us have breasts. So it’s time we talk about breasts. Breasts\, and blood\, and fat\, and vaginas\, and wombs—all of it. How they came to be and how we live with them now\, no matter how weird or hilarious the truth is.” \n\n\nEve is not only a sweeping revision of human history\, it’s an urgent and necessary corrective for a world that has focused primarily on the male body for far too long. Picking up where Sapiens left off\, Eve will completely change what you think you know about evolution and why Homo sapiens has become such a successful and dominant species.\n\n\n  \n\nCAT BOHANNON is a researcher and author with a Ph.D. from Columbia University in the evolution of narrative and cognition. Her essays and poems have appeared in Scientific American\, Mind\, Science Magazine\, The Best American Nonrequired Reading\, The Georgia Review\, The Story Collider\, and Poets Against the War. She lives with her family in Seattle. \nFree; registration is appreciated here. Doors to the auditorium open at 5pm; seating is first come\, first served. \nBooks will be available for purchase by Seminary Co-op and Dr. Bohannon will autograph books at the conclusion of the program. \n  \nNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • WOMEN’S PRIZE FOR NON-FICTION FINALIST • THE REAL ORIGIN OF OUR SPECIES: a myth-busting\, eye-opening landmark account of how humans evolved\, offering a paradigm shift in our thinking about what the female body is\, how it came to be\, and how this evolution still shapes all our lives today \n“For over a century and a half since Darwin\, we have talked about the origin of man. But what about women? Marshaling considerable  wit\, scholarship\, and cutting edge science Cat Bohannon traces the history and importance of female biology and\, in the process\, gives us a refreshing new view on the origin of humanity.”\n—Neil Shubin\, University of Chicago biologist and author of Your Inner Fish \n“A page-turning whistle-stop tour of mammalian development that begins in the Jurassic Era\, Eve recasts the traditional story of evolutionary biology by placing women at its center…. The book is engaging\, playful\, erudite\, discursive and rich with detail.” \n—Sarah Lyall\, The New York Times \n“A smart\, funny\, scientific deep-dive into the power of a woman’s body\, Eve surprises\, educates\, and emboldens.”\n—Bonnie Garmus\, #1 New York Times best-selling author of Lessons in Chemistry

SUMMARY:Your Emotional Brain
DESCRIPTION:How does your brain manage the huge range of human emotions driving everything we do? \nCome take a behind-the-scenes tour of your brain!\nHow are you feeling today? Worried\, content\, nervous\, happy? Think about your work and your boss. Are you confident\, panicky\, annoyed? Now think about your partner\, a loved one\, your first childhood crush. Are you giddy\, anxious\, embarrassed\, excited? There is such a huge variety of human emotions and we know they can change shockingly fast. Those emotions drive us to do all sorts of things – in fact\, they drive most of what we do – all from just 3 lbs. of gray matter between our ears. Aren’t you curious to know how your brain manages all that all the time? Join ISC for an exciting tour through the different parts of your emotional brain to learn how they all interact to guide you\, and what happens when something goes wrong. \nFor the first in our series of programs on the brain\, Dr. Robin Nusslock\, of Northwestern University\, will lay the groundwork by giving us an intriguing tour of the three main systems of your emotional brain – fear\, reward\, and regulation – that make us so wonderfully (and sometimes annoyingly!) human\, by taking a tour of your emotional brain. \nTuesday\, Sept. 16\, 2025 at 6:30pm; doors open at 5:30pm \nThe Bad Apple\, 658 W Belden\, Chicago\, IL 60614 \nTickets $10 HERE \nRobin Nusslock\, PhD\, is a Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University where he directs the Affective & Clinical Neuroscience Lab and serves as Director of Clinical Psychology and Clinical Training. \n \n

SUMMARY:The Brain & Addiction
DESCRIPTION:How is an “addicted” brain different from a “normal” brain?\nPeople use the term “addicted” all the time – “You’re addicted to that show.” “I’m addicted to morning coffee.” Consider these terms: preference\, habit\, pattern\, obsession\, addiction. Do they look different in your brain? Could you define the difference between a caffeine addiction and a cocaine one? Or between food and alcohol? What about social media\, cell phone usage\, compulsive shopping\, gambling\, or online gaming? If you’re curious about the difference between a substance addiction and behavioral one\, or what’s being learned from the widespread use of new medications for obesity\, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to learn from a real expert all about the brain and addiction.  \nDr. Celeste Napier of Rush University will give a fascinating talk explaining how scientists study addiction\, what neuroscience tells us about it\, and why that matters. You’ll gain an understanding of how the brain works when any of us make unhealthy choices\, This talk help you better appreciate disorder differences\, and how to support those that suffer from use disorders and addictions. \nThursday\, Sept. 25\, 2025 at 6:30pm; doors open at 6:00pm \nSulzer Public Library\, 4455 N Lincoln Av\, Chicago\, IL 60625 \nFree\, but Registration is Required HERE. \nT. Celeste Napier\, PhD\, is Professor Emerit of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Napier is also the Education Advisor for the IL Council on Problem Gambling and on the Scientific Advisory Board for the International Center for Responsible Gaming.

SUMMARY:2025 CIERA Annual Public Lecture -- "A New Eye on the Universe Opens: The Vera C. Rubin Observatory"
DESCRIPTION:  \nEach year\, Northwestern University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA) invites a renowned speaker to campus for our Annual Public Lecture. This year’s speaker is Harvard astronomer and experimental physicist Professor Christopher W. Stubbs. \nThis year marks the birth of an ambitious new scientific project. Based in Chile\, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will take a decade-long time-lapse movie of the entire Southern sky\, using the largest digital camera ever made. First-look images were released this summer\, and the project is now transitioning into full operation. \nProfessor Stubbs’ talk will describe how the unprecedented torrent of 20 terabytes per night will propel projects ranging from searches for potentially hazardous asteroids to mapping out the history of cosmic expansion. In particular\, the Rubin data will provide new insights into “dark matter\,” the mysterious substance that comprises 90% of the mass in our own Milky Way galaxy\, as well as “dark energy\,” which is driving the runaway expansion of the Universe. Stubbs will also describe the evolution of the project itself\, and the romance of working in the high Atacama desert. \nRegister for tickets here. \nIf you have any questions about this event\, or would like to make an accessibility request (eg. ASL interpretation)\, please contact ciera-events@northwestern.edu. \nFor those unable to make it to Evanston\, the lecture will be livestreamed on CIERA’s website: https://ciera.northwestern.edu/ciera-livestream/ \n \nAbout the Speaker \nProfessor Christopher W. Stubbs is an experimental physicist at Harvard University working at the interface between particle physics\, cosmology and gravitation. His interests include experimental tests of the foundations of gravitational physics\, searches for dark matter\, characterizing the dark energy\, and observational cosmology. He was a member of one of the two teams that first discovered the dark energy by using supernovae to map out the history of cosmic expansion. Stubbs is deeply engaged in helping give birth to the Rubin Observatory\, having spent much of the 2024-2025 academic year on sabbatical in Chile. He served in scientific management roles during the construction of the camera\, is the architect of the flux calibration system\, and is a member of the Rubin Project Science Team\, the project’s most senior technical management group. He founded the APOLLO collaboration that is using lunar laser ranging and the Earth-Moon-Sun system to probe for novel gravitational effects that may result from physics beyond the standard model. \nAbout CIERA \nCIERA promotes research and education in astrophysics through support of independent postdoctoral fellows\, advanced graduate and undergraduate research\, a vigorous visiting researchers program\, and multi-faceted seminars\, education\, and public outreach programs. Special emphasis is given to interdisciplinary connections with computer science\, applied math\, statistics\, electrical and mechanical engineering\, planetary science\, education and the arts.

SUMMARY:The Brain & Fear
DESCRIPTION:Is fear innate or is it learned? What’s really going on within your brain that makes you afraid\, and is there anything you can do about it?\nJust before Halloween is a great time to consider – what is fear anyway? Do you remember the last time you felt really afraid? Is it innate or is it learned? What’s really going on within your brain that makes you afraid\, and is there anything you can do about it? \nBut fear is not an emotion at the ready all the time – it is only experienced when something is perceived as threatening. And situations perceived as threatening are based on previous fear-inducing encounters\, so require memory. Jelena Radulovic\, MD\, PhD\, Einstein College of Medicine\, studies the neuroscience of fear and will share with us how researchers study it in the lab and what it means for us humans. She’ll explain how animals shape their fear responses first through brain development\, and then through experiences of their inner and outer world. But what if you don’t know something is threatening\, would you be afraid? Dr. Radulovic will explain for us how this happens at the level of brain cells and networks. \nWe promise it will be non-scary but memorable! \nDr. Radulovic is a Professor of Neuroscience at Einstein College of Medicine in NY where she is Director ot the Psychiatry Research Institute at Montefiore Einstein (PRIME).
