SUMMARY:Electric Car Ride & Drive plus IIT’s Formula Electric Race Car (#ChiSciFest)
DESCRIPTION:Curious about electric cars?  You can take a test drive of a new Nissan Leaf car and see a Formula Electric race car designed and built by IIT students! \n \nIllinois Science Council is fortunate to partner with the Chicago Area Clean Cities coalition to educate people about the use of clean fuels and clean fuel vehicles throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. Nissan will have their new electric Leaf vehicle that you can take on a test drive (or ride along) for FREE.  (Other manufacturers being added soon.) After you’ve heard the science speakers and seen the demos up on the Mart’s 12th floor for Chicago Science Fest\, step outside to the driveway.  Cars will be parked along the driveway with representatives who can answer all your questions.  No registration necessary! \n \n  \nWhile you test drive the Nissan Leaf you can learn about Nissan’s partnership with ComEd which is providing  customers and employees the opportunity to purchase the all new\, all electric 2018 Nissan LEAF at a savings of up to $3\,000 plus a potential tax credit of up to $7\,500 through June 30. \n  \n \n  \nIIT (Illinois Institute of Technology) Motorsports competes this year in its 10th consecutive year in Formula SAE competition against 20 other universities.  Formula SAE is a student design competition which is organized by SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers). Every year\, student design teams are tasked to develop a small formula-style race car for a fictional manufacturing company. The prototype race car is evaluated on a variety of attributes during the annual competition.

SUMMARY:The Origins of the Genus Homo
DESCRIPTION:When did our ancestors look the way we expect the earliest members of our genus to have looked? When did they behave in the way we expect the earliest members of our genus to have behaved? The search for what defines the genus Homo has spanned decades and is still debated among scientists today. In this talk\, paleoanthropologist Dr. Bernard Wood will survey the history of attempts to find the earliest members of the genus Homo\, including very recent and controversial additions. He will review the complications that arise from defining the genus and discuss how half-a-century of paleontological research has taught him what to look for within the hominin fossil record when searching for the origins of our genus Homo. Presented by The Leakey Foundation\, Chicago Council on Science and Technology\, and Chicago Public Library. Find out more here.

SUMMARY:Delving into the Hidden Paintings of Picasso
DESCRIPTION:In 1957\, when Pablo Picasso was in his seventh decade\, he mused that x-ray technology might one day reveal a lost work underneath one of his early paintings. Today\, that prediction became reality-although the technology involved goes far beyond x-rays. \nEmeline Pouyet\, a postdoctoral fellow at the Northwestern/Art Institute Center for Scientific Studies in the Arts\, will present how innovative technical studies are helping rediscover Picasso’s decision making and creative processes at this early and seminal part of his career. SUMMARY:Science and the Transformation of Cities
DESCRIPTION:In the last 120 years\, rapid urbanization has brought about an amazing societal transformation. In the past\, 80 percent of the world‘s population lived in rural areas; now\, the reverse is true. That dramatic population shift raises concerns about food security\, access to quality education and health care\, and reliable and resilient energy\, water\, and transportation systems\, among other things. To manage these resources effectively\, governments need to know how cities grow and how these various infrastructural components interact as a complex system. But what role will scientists and engineers have in remaking today’s cities for tomorrow? \nJoin Argonne scientist Ralph Muehleisen as he discusses science and engineering’s impact on the future of cities. Details here. \n

SUMMARY:How Do You Want Your Data: Hot or Cold?
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Brice Ménard\, Associate Professor at John Hopkins University\, for the latest CIERA Interdisciplinary Colloquium. \nAs time goes on\, our interaction with large datasets tends to be more involved and less intuitive. Most datasets can no longer be visualized in their entirety and we have to interact with them mathematically\, making blind data exploration challenging. In this talk Professor Brice Ménard will present some theoretical considerations of data analysis and data complexity\, and will show that performing a “cooling” operation on data can automatically reveal the inherent structure of a dataset and the properties of its underlying population. \nDuring his talk\, Professor Ménard will then present a new tool\, the Sequencer\, which can generically perform such a cooling operation on arbitrary datasets. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For more information\, visit the CIERA website.

SUMMARY:C2ST Speakeasy: Mission to Mars--Team Composition
DESCRIPTION:NASA and its international partners are planning to send humans to Mars in the 2030’s. Mission to Mars will challenge the frontiers of human collaboration as the crew lives and works in an extreme environment. \nHow will NASA build a team that can excel in this extreme environment? Could you go on such a mission? \nResearch is ongoing to determine how combinations of team members interact and perform in an extreme environment similar to that expected of deep space exploration. Join for an evening with Dr. Suzanne Bell as she describes her research creating a predictive model of team composition for Mission to Mars. Bring your questions about Mission to Mars and composing teams in space and beyond; Dr. Bell will leave plenty of time for Q&A. \nAdditional details and tickets here.

SUMMARY:Extreme Storms
DESCRIPTION:Huge downpours\, massive flooding\, heat waves\, prolonged droughts—these extreme events are occurring more frequently\, and with greater intensity. “100-year-floods” are occurring every year or two; should we consider these weather events the new ‘normal’? How are cities and regions responding and planning under such uncertainties? \nThis program will discuss the science behind these storms\, the challenges in coping with changing weather patterns\, new technologies and approaches to adapting to these realities\, and the impact on the public and citizens in these areas. Details here.
