SUMMARY:"Revelations in Air" - A Discussion on the Sense of Smell
DESCRIPTION:ISC is excited to offer this fun and interesting conversation with science writers Jude Stewart and Chris Kemp about our frequently under-appreciated sense of smell. \nOverlapping with taste yet larger in scope\, smell is the sense that comes closest to pure perception. Smell can collapse space and time\, unlocking memories and transporting us to worlds both new and familiar. Yet as clearly as each of us can recognize different smells — the bright tang of citrus\, freshly sharpened pencils\, parched earth after rain — few of us understand how and why we smell. \nJude Stewart will share her fascinating journey into the weird and wonderful world of smell that became her latest book\, “Revelations in Air: A Guidebook to Smell.” \nGuests will take their own scent-journey as easy experiments are demonstrated during the program. Register by Saturday\, Oct. 23 and you’ll be sent a list of items to have on hand to partake in the experiments to sniff-along with us. It will open your mind – to a new way of experiencing the world! \nWe’ll allow plenty of time for Q&A for what will certainly be an enlightening conversation! \nWednesday October 27\, 2021 6:30pm – 8:00pm (CT) \nTix: $0-$5 (limited free tickets available) \nSpace is limited. To receive Zoom link\, register today! \nhttps://OurNoseKnows.eventbrite.com \nThis program is in partnership with Seminary Co-op Bookstore. You can pre-order your copy of “Revelations in Air: A Guidebook to Smell” today! \n\n\nABOUT JUDE STEWART \nJude Stewart writes about design and culture for Slate\, the Believer\, Fast Company\, Design Observer and other publications. She is also a contributing editor at PRINT magazine. She is the author of ROY G. BIV (2013) and Patternalia\, (2015) and most recently Revelations in Air: A Guidebook to Smell. Stewart lives in Chicago. \nABOUT CHRISTOPHER KEMP \nChristopher Kemp is a molecular biologist. He’s written for Nature\, Science\, Outside\, and New Scientist\, and is the author of Floating Gold: A Natural (and Unnatural) History of Ambergris (2012)\, The Lost Species (2017)\, and the upcoming Dark and Magical Places: The Neuroscience of Navigation (2022). He lives in Michigan with his wife\, three sons\, and a dog.

SUMMARY:How to Survive & Thrive in a Pandemic using Narrative Medicine - 2022-01-24
DESCRIPTION:Survive and thrive in a pandemic with a 3-minute mental makeover used in medicine\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe ongoing burden of COVID-19 \, and just the January blahs\, can add to stress and anxiety for anyone. It’s especially challenging for healthcare workers who knew long before pandemics that patients and parents were extremely stressed out. However\, there is a strategy proven to help lower stress for patients\, parents\, and their practitioners\, and it can help anyone else too. \nDr. David Thoele\, a pediatric cardiologist at Advocate Children’s Hospital\, will share with us how mindfulness and meditation relate to the idea of ‘narrative medicine’ and how it helps ease stress. Dr. Thoele will walk us all through an easy 3-Minute Mental Makeover (3MMM) in this engaging talk. It can be helpful to any level of your mental state -– general malaise and languishing\, or serious stress and anxiety. \nPlease join us for an interactive lunchtime talk where you’ll learn how narrative medicine can lower your stress let you survive & thrive during a pandemic. It will only take an hour\, so well worth it! \nIt’s virtual\, so you can bring your own lunch and don’t have to share with anyone! You should have a pen and paper handy for the exercise. \nA Zoom link will be emailed to all who register in advance. \nWe look forward to seeing you! \n \nDavid G. Thoele\, MD is Co-Director of Narrative Medicine and a pediatric cardiologist at Advocate Children’s Hospital. He started the program in narrative medicine at ACH in 2013. He is a writer and speaker who has led writing workshops at The Examined Life Conference\, the International Health Humanities meeting\, and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). His creative essays are featured in Pulse\, Hektoen International\, Ars Medica\, and Physicians Practice. \nHe learned the healing power of writing when his daughter got sick and he experienced the medical system from a parent’s perspective. He developed a short writing exercise for doctors to use with their patients. He and his group published studies in The Permanente Journal that showed that the 3MMM reduced stress for patients\, families and health practitioners\, and led to long-term benefits (also presented at two Johns Hopkins ICU conferences). \nDr. David Thoele YouTube channel : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdKJZ6Vqi_iogTQLVza-c_A \nNarrative Medicine Webpage on the Advocate Children’s Hospital website\, please feel free to share and use this link when sharing information about our program: https://www.advocatechildrenshospital.com/health-resources/support-services/narrative-medicine \n  \n

SUMMARY:Emotional: How Feelings Shape Our Thinking with Leonard Mlodinow - 2022-02-10
DESCRIPTION:Renowned science writer Leonard Mlodinow will discuss his fascinating new book about how human emotions really drive everything we do.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou make hundreds of decisions every day\, from what to eat for breakfast to how you should invest\, and not one of those decisions would be possible without emotion. It has long been said that thinking and feeling are separate and opposing forces in our behavior. But as Leonard Mlodinow\, PhD\, explores in his latest book\, Emotional: How Feelings Shape Our Thinking\, extraordinary advances in psychology and neuroscience have proven that emotions are as critical to our well-being as thinking. \nHow can you connect better with others? How can you make sense of your frustration\, fear\, and anxiety? What can you do to live a happier life? The answers lie in understanding your emotions. Journeying from the labs of pioneering scientists to real-world scenarios that have flirted with disaster\, Mlodinow shows how our emotions can help\, why they sometimes hurt\, and what we can learn in both instances. \nPlease join us for what will certainly be at very interesting and valuable talk about something we think we’re familiar with — our emotions. \nEmotional is available from ISC’s partner in this event\, Seminary Co-op Bookstores. \nIt’s virtual\, so you can bring food & drink and don’t have to share with anyone! A Zoom link will be emailed to all who register in advance. \nWe look forward to seeing you! \n\n\n\nLEONARD MLODINOW received his PhD in theoretical physics from the University of California\, Berkeley\, was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute\, and was on the faculty of the California Institute of Technology. His previous books include the best sellers: The Grand Design and A Briefer History of Time (both with Stephen Hawking)\, Subliminal (winner of the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award)\, The Drunkard’s Walk\, and Elastic. \nAbout his latest book\, Emotional: How Feelings Shape Our Thinking: \nWe’ve all been told that thinking rationally is the key to success. But at the cutting edge of science\, researchers are discovering that feeling is every bit as important as thinking. Using deep insights into our evolution and biology\, Mlodinow gives us the tools to understand our emotions better and to maximize their benefits. Told with his characteristic clarity and fascinating stories\, Emotional explores the new science of feelings and offers us an essential guide to making the most of one of nature’s greatest gifts. \nAvailable from the Seminary Co-op Bookstore.

SUMMARY:Pi Day "Pi K" 3.14-mile fun run celebrating MATH!
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to improved covid numbers\, we’re super excited to be LIVE again for our 10th Annual Pi Day 3.14-mile Fun Run!! Three cheers for vaccines\, boosters\, and mask-wearers! Join us in-person on 3/14 at 6:28pm to run a 3.14 mile loop and socialize afterwards. If you’re not ready for people yet\, that’s okay\, you can select our virtual option. Here’s the plan: \n1. REGISTER at PiDayRun.org \nRegister EARLY (by midnight Thursday\, February 24) and we’ll get this year’s awesome PiK t-shirt delivered to you by March 14th to wear on Pi Day. \nRegister later (until midnight March 14) to have your collectible PiK t-shirt delivered after Pi Day. \nPi & Pie Fans anywhere can join this year — no need to come to Chicago! (There will be a small surcharge to ship t-shirts overseas. There’s math involved.) \nAll registrants receive this year’s awesome Pi K t-shirt they can wear proudly to show their respect for math and support of science outreach. \n2. “RUN” 3.14 something: \nIn Person: We’ll meet at the South Loop Fleet Feet Sports running store in Chicago on March 14. Be there and ready for the run start at 6:28pm CT (2 PI!!) We’ll have a 3.14-mile route mapped out for you and afterward we’ll have donuts to enjoy in celebration of everything circular. \nVirtual: You should run\, walk\, skip\, cartwheel\, or saunter 3.14 miles\, which is a little more than a 5K. (It’s the honor system. We won’t know if you spent 3.14 hours on your couch.) You can also go 3.14 kilometers\, furlongs\, acres\, leagues\, or city blocks if you choose\, where you choose! But make sure you are wearing your Pi K shirt\, and share your picture on our social media pages. \n—————————————————————————– \nThe Pi K Shirt:  \nThis year’s collectible tee is in hot pink!!  ISC’s 2022 Pi K Fun Run T-shirt is a softstyle unisex cotton tee in sizes XS – 2XL. \nThe logo on the front is not some esoteric equation. Rather\, it indicates this is a “Pi K” as opposed to a 5K run (a little extra for math)\, and the exponent number indicates this year\, 2022\, is the 10th(!!!!) annual run. \nThe back of the shirt gives a nod to the pandemic and celebration of vaccines with a syringe replacing the numeral 1 in 3.14. The “dividing line” between 3.14 and ISC’s logo is not a line at all. Up close you’ll notice it’s a long sequence of digits of pi. 🙂 \n \nAll proceeds support the STEM outreach efforts of Illinois Science Council\, an independent 501c3 nonprofit based in Chicago that offers creative and engaging science programs for teens and adults. \nSignificance of Pi: \nPi\, in case you don’t remember\, is abbreviated to 3.14 but continues indefinitely. To date\, it has been calculated by computer to over 1.2 trillion digits. Competitions exist for reciting the most digits by memory. As the world’s most famous mathematical constant\, Pi is important to many formulas used in mathematics\, science\, engineering and statistics.

SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge — Online preview talk & training with “iNaturalist” app - 2022-04-25
DESCRIPTION:Join ISC to learn what the City Nature Challenge is about\, and how to use iNaturalist to make nature observations with your phone.\n  \nThe CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April. Cities around the U.S. and world are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal. Also which city gathers the most observations of nature\, finds the most species\, and engages the most people in the event.\n\nISC is pleased to present a virtual presentation in advance of Chicago’s City Nature Challenge. You’ll hear from two of our Associates\, Liz Lux and Michael Sherillo\, detailing the history of the challenge and how it works\, how to use the iNaturalist app to participate on the weekend\, and what organisms you might find in your urban environment.\n\nTo be guaranteed a spot\, register HERE:  All registrants will be emailed a Zoom link to join the presentation. We’ll have plenty of time for questions and discussion with the presenters.\n\n\nThen you can take the knowledge learned and join Liz in person at Chicago’s West Ridge Nature Park on Saturday morning\, April 30\, 10am-12noon to make observations of the flora and fauna you see! No need to register to join the walk at West Ridge Nature Park — just show up! We’ll gather near the entrance at 10am and be there until about noon.\n\nCan’t make it to that location? That’s okay. You can head out into ANY nature near you all weekend to participate. It’s easy and a fun way to engage with nature when you’re in a large city! Anyone\, anywhere can search for wild plants\, animals\, and other creatures between April 29th and May 2nd to see how many species you can find and show the world how diverse our Chicago region is. Add your observations to iNaturalist and they’ll automatically be included in the CNC project for Chicago.

SUMMARY:**POSTPONED** "Butts: A Backstory" talk with author Heather Radke - 2022-12-01
DESCRIPTION:Note: this event is postponed. Tickets purchased will be honored when the program is rescheduled or you may contact the venue\, Museum of Surgical Science\, for refunds. \nHeather Radke presents her cheeky new book\, Butts: A Backstory!\nWhether we love them or hate them\, think they’re sexy\, think they’re strange\, consider them too big\, too small\, or anywhere in between\, humans have a complicated relationship with butts. It is a body part unique to humans\, critical to our evolution and survival\, and yet it has come to signify so much more: sex\, desire\, comedy\, shame. A woman’s butt\, in particular\, is forever being assessed\, criticized\, and objectified\, from anxious self-examinations trying on jeans in department store dressing rooms to enduring crass remarks while walking down a street or high school hallways. But why? In Butts: A Backstory\, reporter\, essayist\, and RadioLab contributing editor Heather Radke is determined to find out. \nSpanning nearly two centuries\, this “whip-smart” (Publishers Weekly\, starred review) cultural history takes us from the performance halls of 19th-century London to the aerobics studios of the 1980s\, the music video set of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” and the mountains of Arizona\, where every year humans and horses race in a feat of gluteal endurance. Along the way\, she meets evolutionary biologists who study how butts first developed; models whose measurements have defined jean sizing for millions of women; and the fitness gurus who created fads like “Buns of Steel.” She also examines the central importance of race through figures like Sarah Bartmann\, once known as the “Venus Hottentot\,” Josephine Baker\, Jennifer Lopez\, and other women of color whose butts have been idolized\, envied\, and despised. \nPart deep dive reportage\, part personal journey\, part cabinet of curiosities\, Butts is an entertaining\, illuminating\, and thoughtful examination of why certain silhouettes come in and out of fashion—and how larger ideas about race\, control\, liberation\, and power affect our most private feelings about ourselves and others. \nBook Talk 6-7PM\, with book signing afterwards. \nBooks will be available to purchase in person for $28.99. You may also purchase the book here: https://www.semcoop.com/butts \n*** \nONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF THE FALL: Esquire\, Time\, LitHub\, The Every Girl\, BookPage \n“Delving into this history\, Radke provides fresh insights into why butts hold such sway over society—and what that says about our relationships to race\, class\, gender\, and power.” —TIME “A fun\, fascinating\, and surprisingly empowering exploration of the history and cultural significance of the butt.” —*Starred Review* Library Journal \nIn this “deeply thought\, rigorously researched\, and riveting” debut (Melissa Febos\, author of Girlhood and Body Work)\, Radke presents a compelling case about how this particular part of a woman’s figure actually embodies her experience moving through the world\, and how reclaiming it can help us move forward. BUTTS legitimizes the conversation and study of something that’s been typically considered uncouth.

SUMMARY:Pi Day "Pi K" Fun Run 2023
DESCRIPTION:Pi Day “Pi K” Fun Run 2023\n11th Annual Celebration of the BEST HOLIDAY EVER!\nWe’re gearing up for EVERYBODY’S favorite “holiday” — PI DAY! Registration is now open for ISC’s 3.14-mile “Pi K” Fun Run followed by pie-flavored donuts and other circular treats. Mid-March is the perfect time to treat your body to some exercise\, and your tastebuds to delicious treats\, so join the fun!! All proceeds support the STEM outreach efforts of Illinois Science Council\, an independent 501c3 nonprofit based in Chicago that offers creative\, engaging science programs for teens and adults. Here’s how it works: \n1. REGISTER: \nRegister early (by midnight Thursday\, February 23) and you’ll get this year’s awesome PiK t-shirt mailed directly to you to wear on Pi Day. \nRegister later (2/24 until midnight March 14) to have your collectible PiK t-shirt mailed after Pi Day. \nGroup Discount >> If you register a group of 4 or more together\, you’ll get $3.14 off each registration! \nAll registrants receive this year’s coveted Pi K t-shirt they can wear proudly to show their respect for math and support of science outreach. \n2. “RUN” 3.14: \nIn Person: Come to Chicago’s South Loop Fleet Feet Sports running store on Pi Day\, March 14. Arrive to be ready for the run start at 6:28pm CT (2 Pi!!) There is gear check at the store and we’ll have a 3.14-mile route mapped out for you. When you get back we’ll have delicious treats to enjoy in celebration of everything circular. \nVirtual: You should run\, walk\, skip\, cartwheel\, or saunter 3.14 miles\, which is a little more than a 5K. (It’s the honor system. We won’t know if you spent 3.14 hours on your couch.) You can also go 3.14 kilometers\, furlongs\, acres\, leagues\, or city blocks if you choose\, anywhere you choose! Just be sure to wear your Pi K shirt and share your picture on ISC’s social media pages. \n—————————————————————————– \n \nISC’s 2023 Pi K Fun Run T-shirt is a softstyle unisex cotton tee available in sizes XS – 2XL. This year’s collectible tee is in dark navy – a perfect addition to your collection. The logo on the front is not some esoteric equation. Rather\, it simply indicates this is a “Pi K” as opposed to a 5K run (a little extra for math)\, and the exponent number indicates this year\, 2023 is our 11th annual run. \nThe back makes it clear you dig math and how far you ran. The line line between 3.14 and the ISC and FleetFeet logos is not a divider line at all. Up close you’ll note that it’s a long sequence of digits of pi. 🙂 \nSignificance of Pi: \nPi\, in case you don’t remember\, is abbreviated to 3.14 but continues indefinitely. To date\, it has been calculated by computer to over 1.2 trillion digits. Competitions exist for reciting the most digits by memory. As the world’s most famous mathematical constant\, Pi is important to many formulas used in mathematics\, science\, engineering and statistics. \nAwesome Sponsors! ISC is thrilled to partner again with Fleet Feet Sports\, Chicago’s top running source\, for this fun event. If you are interested in partnership opportunities for this\, or ISC’s many STEM events\, or want to sponsor your company team to run the Pi K\, email Monica at PiDay@IllinoisScience.org. \n \nMore Details: \nThere is no packet pickup prior to the run but post-run\, back at Fleet Feet\, we’ll have sweet circular treats! \nBag check is available at the stores and you can change clothes there\, so please arrive early. \nT-shirts will be mailed to you in advance so you can wear it to the run if you register by Thursday\, 2/23. If you register between 2/24 – 3/14\, your shirt will arrive about 2 weeks after Pi Day. \nWeather: This is Chicago. Weather on March 14 could be warm and sunny\, or cold\, windy and wet. You know how to dress accordingly. Pi K takes place rain\, snow\, or shine. If cancellation is warranted due to severe weather conditions\, announcements will be made on the day of the run\, not in advance. Even if the run is cancelled\, the post party probably won’t be. We’re not savages!! There are no refunds but transfers are allowed. \nWAIVER and RELEASE: Waiver of Responsibility: I know that participating in a running/walking event is a potentially hazardous activity. I should not enter unless I am medically able and properly trained. I agree to abide by a decision of a race official relative to my ability to safely complete the run/walk. I assume all risks associated with running/walking in this event including but not limited to: falls\, contact with other participants\, the effects of the weather\, including low temperature/high heat and/or humidity\, traffic\, and the conditions of the course\, all risk being known and appreciated by me. \nHaving read this waiver and knowing these facts and in consideration of my entry\, I\, for myself\, and anyone entitled to act on my behalf\, waive and release Illinois Science Council and its officers and employees\, DL ZIMCO\, Inc. d/b/a Fleet Feet Sports-Chicago and its officers and employees\, and all other sponsors\, individuals\, and volunteers associated with the event\, their representatives and successors and all claims of liabilities of any kind arising out of my participation in this event. SUMMARY:No Peaceful Burying Place
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the dark history of body snatching through the lost letter of Dr. Tobias Smollett to Dr. William Hunter! \n\n\n\n“NO PEACEFUL BURIAL PLACE”: Encountering Body-Snatching and Teaching Anatomy from a Lost Letter of Tobias Smollett\, M.D.\, to Dr. William Hunter \nThe talk will focus on interpreting a newly discovered letter from the writer Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) to his fellow Scot\, the celebrated anatomist Dr. William Hunter (1718-1783). This opaque letter\, long deemed lost but now preserved in the Wellcome Medical Museum in London\, has been claimed as evidence of the author’s involvement\, directly or by proxy\, in the illicit trade of body snatching. As one who had trained as a surgeon\, Smollett was well aware of the practice of body snatching\, whereby anatomists employed ruffian gangs to bargain with the hangman for the unclaimed bodies of miscreants strung up on the gallows\, or unlawfully to dig up corpses of the freshly buried in the dead of night. The talk will move from examining the letter to a broader discussion of the advent of the teaching of practical anatomy in the mid eighteenth century. It will be illustrated with images\, many of them satirical\, delineating popular attitudes to the practice. \n \n*** \nAccessible accommodations include a ramp entrance and elevator. SUMMARY:ID Birds & Bees with ISC!
DESCRIPTION:Get back to nature with the City Nature Challenge\nISC is excited to present an Identification Social for the global event “City Nature Challenge.” We’ll gather at Metropolitan Brewery with other citizen scientists\, get a quick tutorial on how to use iNaturalist\, and then hang out enjoying the local brew while marking observations that occurred over the past weekend. \nBring your own laptop or device to work on!  Metropolitan is family and dog friendly\, with gluten-free and NA options. \nCan’t make it that evening? That’s okay. You can head out into ANY nature near you the previous weekend to participate. It’s easy and a fun way to engage with nature when you’re in a large city! Anyone\, anywhere can search for wild plants\, animals\, and other creatures between April 28th and May 1st to see how many species you can find and show the world how diverse our Chicago region is. Add your observations to iNaturalist and they’ll automatically be included in the project. Happy exploring! \nAbout the City Nature Challenge:\nStarted in 2016 as a competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles\, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event\, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their cities. The CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April\, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see not only what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal\, but also which city can gather the most observations of nature\, find the most species\, and engage the most people in the event.

SUMMARY:Sundays on State = SCIENCE on State!
DESCRIPTION:Chicago’s iconic State Street closes to traffic on 2 Sundays this summer (7/16 and 8/13) as it transforms into the extremely creative FREE street festival “Sundays on State.” ISC is serving up SCIENCE with the most interesting\, engaging\, and photo-friendly booth to complement the typical food\, art\, and sales displays. This year we’ll have: \n\nreal human and animal brains\, along with neuroscientists to chat with;\nlive geckos\, salamanders\, snakes\, and insects people can handle and pose with;\nanimal skeletons; \nmicroscope-viewing of brain cells; and\nbrain games to play\n\nIf you have any fears or hesitations about snakes\, reptiles\, this the perfect opportunity for an easy\, low-key\, no-stress\, friendly and informative experience to reduce anxiety. You’ll get to see cute geckos\, maybe a bearded dragon\, and cute little snakes. You can also learn about your brain and talk with real neuroscientists. Be curious and come say Hi! \nSunday\, August 13\, 2023 \n11:00am – 6:00pm \nState Street from Lake to Adams\, Chicago\, IL \nISC’s booth is at 11 N.
