SUMMARY:ID the Birds & Bees with ISC - City Nature Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Learn what the City Nature Challenge is about\, how to use iNaturalist to ID local flora & fauna\, and hang out with other citizen scientists!\n\n\nISC welcomes you to join us for an “Identification Social Night” for the global event City Nature Challenge. We’ll gather at District Brew Yards with other citizen scientists\, get a quick tutorial on how to use the great iNaturalist app\, and then hang out enjoying the local brew while marking observations that occurred over the past weekend. \nBring your own laptop or device to work on! \nCan’t make it that evening? Not a problem! You can still participate by heading out into ANY nature near you the previous weekend\, Friday through Monday. It’s really easy and a fun way to engage with nature when you’re in a large city! Anyone\, anywhere can search for wild plants\, animals\, and other creatures between April 25-28th. Just add your observations to iNaturalist and they’ll automatically be included in the project. See how many species you can find and show the world how diverse our Chicago region is! \nHappy exploring! \n\n\n\n\nAbout the City Nature Challenge: \nStarted in 2016 as a competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles\, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event\, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their cities. The CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April\, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see not only what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal\, but also which city can gather the most observations of nature\, find the most species\, and engage the most people in the event.

SUMMARY:Your Emotional Brain
DESCRIPTION:How does your brain manage the huge range of human emotions driving everything we do? \nCome take a behind-the-scenes tour of your brain!\nHow are you feeling today? Worried\, content\, nervous\, happy? Think about your work and your boss. Are you confident\, panicky\, annoyed? Now think about your partner\, a loved one\, your first childhood crush. Are you giddy\, anxious\, embarrassed\, excited? There is such a huge variety of human emotions and we know they can change shockingly fast. Those emotions drive us to do all sorts of things – in fact\, they drive most of what we do – all from just 3 lbs. of gray matter between our ears. Aren’t you curious to know how your brain manages all that all the time? Join ISC for an exciting tour through the different parts of your emotional brain to learn how they all interact to guide you\, and what happens when something goes wrong. \nFor the first in our series of programs on the brain\, Dr. Robin Nusslock\, of Northwestern University\, will lay the groundwork by giving us an intriguing tour of the three main systems of your emotional brain – fear\, reward\, and regulation – that make us so wonderfully (and sometimes annoyingly!) human\, by taking a tour of your emotional brain. \nTuesday\, Sept. 16\, 2025 at 6:30pm; doors open at 5:30pm \nThe Bad Apple\, 658 W Belden\, Chicago\, IL 60614 \nTickets $10 HERE \nRobin Nusslock\, PhD\, is a Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University where he directs the Affective & Clinical Neuroscience Lab and serves as Director of Clinical Psychology and Clinical Training. \n \n

SUMMARY:The Brain & Addiction
DESCRIPTION:How is an “addicted” brain different from a “normal” brain?\nPeople use the term “addicted” all the time – “You’re addicted to that show.” “I’m addicted to morning coffee.” Consider these terms: preference\, habit\, pattern\, obsession\, addiction. Do they look different in your brain? Could you define the difference between a caffeine addiction and a cocaine one? Or between food and alcohol? What about social media\, cell phone usage\, compulsive shopping\, gambling\, or online gaming? If you’re curious about the difference between a substance addiction and behavioral one\, or what’s being learned from the widespread use of new medications for obesity\, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to learn from a real expert all about the brain and addiction.  \nDr. Celeste Napier of Rush University will give a fascinating talk explaining how scientists study addiction\, what neuroscience tells us about it\, and why that matters. You’ll gain an understanding of how the brain works when any of us make unhealthy choices\, This talk help you better appreciate disorder differences\, and how to support those that suffer from use disorders and addictions. \nThursday\, Sept. 25\, 2025 at 6:30pm; doors open at 6:00pm \nSulzer Public Library\, 4455 N Lincoln Av\, Chicago\, IL 60625 \nFree\, but Registration is Required HERE. \nT. Celeste Napier\, PhD\, is Professor Emerit of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Napier is also the Education Advisor for the IL Council on Problem Gambling and on the Scientific Advisory Board for the International Center for Responsible Gaming.

SUMMARY:2025 CIERA Annual Public Lecture -- "A New Eye on the Universe Opens: The Vera C. Rubin Observatory"
DESCRIPTION:  \nEach year\, Northwestern University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA) invites a renowned speaker to campus for our Annual Public Lecture. This year’s speaker is Harvard astronomer and experimental physicist Professor Christopher W. Stubbs. \nThis year marks the birth of an ambitious new scientific project. Based in Chile\, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will take a decade-long time-lapse movie of the entire Southern sky\, using the largest digital camera ever made. First-look images were released this summer\, and the project is now transitioning into full operation. \nProfessor Stubbs’ talk will describe how the unprecedented torrent of 20 terabytes per night will propel projects ranging from searches for potentially hazardous asteroids to mapping out the history of cosmic expansion. In particular\, the Rubin data will provide new insights into “dark matter\,” the mysterious substance that comprises 90% of the mass in our own Milky Way galaxy\, as well as “dark energy\,” which is driving the runaway expansion of the Universe. Stubbs will also describe the evolution of the project itself\, and the romance of working in the high Atacama desert. \nRegister for tickets here. \nIf you have any questions about this event\, or would like to make an accessibility request (eg. ASL interpretation)\, please contact ciera-events@northwestern.edu. \nFor those unable to make it to Evanston\, the lecture will be livestreamed on CIERA’s website: https://ciera.northwestern.edu/ciera-livestream/ \n \nAbout the Speaker \nProfessor Christopher W. Stubbs is an experimental physicist at Harvard University working at the interface between particle physics\, cosmology and gravitation. His interests include experimental tests of the foundations of gravitational physics\, searches for dark matter\, characterizing the dark energy\, and observational cosmology. He was a member of one of the two teams that first discovered the dark energy by using supernovae to map out the history of cosmic expansion. Stubbs is deeply engaged in helping give birth to the Rubin Observatory\, having spent much of the 2024-2025 academic year on sabbatical in Chile. He served in scientific management roles during the construction of the camera\, is the architect of the flux calibration system\, and is a member of the Rubin Project Science Team\, the project’s most senior technical management group. He founded the APOLLO collaboration that is using lunar laser ranging and the Earth-Moon-Sun system to probe for novel gravitational effects that may result from physics beyond the standard model. \nAbout CIERA \nCIERA promotes research and education in astrophysics through support of independent postdoctoral fellows\, advanced graduate and undergraduate research\, a vigorous visiting researchers program\, and multi-faceted seminars\, education\, and public outreach programs. Special emphasis is given to interdisciplinary connections with computer science\, applied math\, statistics\, electrical and mechanical engineering\, planetary science\, education and the arts.

SUMMARY:The Brain & Fear
DESCRIPTION:Is fear innate or is it learned? What’s really going on within your brain that makes you afraid\, and is there anything you can do about it?\nJust before Halloween is a great time to consider – what is fear anyway? Do you remember the last time you felt really afraid? Is it innate or is it learned? What’s really going on within your brain that makes you afraid\, and is there anything you can do about it? \nBut fear is not an emotion at the ready all the time – it is only experienced when something is perceived as threatening. And situations perceived as threatening are based on previous fear-inducing encounters\, so require memory. Jelena Radulovic\, MD\, PhD\, Einstein College of Medicine\, studies the neuroscience of fear and will share with us how researchers study it in the lab and what it means for us humans. She’ll explain how animals shape their fear responses first through brain development\, and then through experiences of their inner and outer world. But what if you don’t know something is threatening\, would you be afraid? Dr. Radulovic will explain for us how this happens at the level of brain cells and networks. \nWe promise it will be non-scary but memorable! \nDr. Radulovic is a Professor of Neuroscience at Einstein College of Medicine in NY where she is Director ot the Psychiatry Research Institute at Montefiore Einstein (PRIME).

SUMMARY:The Brain & Misinformation
DESCRIPTION:Why are people inclined to believe misinformation? Come learn what makes some humans cling to ideas that aren’t true.\nWhy are people inclined to believe misinformation? How can they fall for such obviously wrong ideas? They key is that it always seems to be *others * and never oneself who is susceptible to such thinking\, right? But that’s incorrect thinking in itself. \nJoin us for an excellent opportunity to really understand this critically important topic at a time when we can be constantly overwhelmed by massive amounts of information\, much of it from unknown sources and just not true. \nMatthew Facciani\, is an interdisciplinary social scientist at Notre Dame University with a background in neuroscience and psychology and a PhD in sociology. He will share the latest research on this issue and shed light on how false beliefs take root and spread. Dr. Facciani will discuss his new book Misguided: Where Misinformation Starts\, How It Spreads\, and What to Do About It and address the cognitive\, emotional\, and social factors that make us all susceptible to misinformation. There will be ample time for audience Q&A. \nWednesday\, Oct. 22\, 2025 at 6:30pm (doors open 6pm) \nTheater Wit\, 1229 W Belmont Av.\, Chicago\, IL (map) \nTickets are $10 at BrainAndMisinformation \nSeating is limited. \n  \nCopies of Misguided will be available for purchase and signing after the event thanks to The Book Cellar.

All proceeds support the STEM outreach programs of Illinois Science Council\, an independent 501c3 nonprofit in Chicago that offers engaging STEM programs for adults and teens. \nSponsorship – If you are interested in partnership opportunities for this\, or any of ISC’s many STEM events\, email Monica at PiDay@IllinoisScience.org. \nTHE Pi K PLAN\n1. SIGN UP! \nRegister EARLY (by midnight Tuesday\, February 24) and we’ll do our darndest to get this year’s awesome Pi K t-shirt mailed directly to you by March 14th to wear on Pi Day. \nRegister LATER (from 2/25 until midnight March 14) to have your collectible Pi K t-shirt mailed to you after Pi Day. \nVIRTUALLY: Pi & Pie Fans anywhere can join in. If you aren’t in Chicago\, register and run wherever you are and we will send you the Pi K t-shirt! (There will be a small surcharge to ship shirts overseas as there’s math involved. 😉 ) \nSponsored Teams: If you’d like your company or organization to sponsor a team to run the Pi K\, email Monica at PiDay@IllinoisScience.org. \nAll registrants receive this year’s coveted Pi K t-shirt they can wear proudly to show their respect for math and support of science outreach. \n2. RUN or WALK 3.14 on 3/14 \nIn Person: Come to the Clark Park on the Chicago River at 3400 N Rockwell St. between 9-9:20am to be ready for the run start at 9:30am. There’s no packet pick up in advance. There will be space for gear check and we’ll have the 3.14-mile loop route mapped out for you. \nVirtual: You should run\, walk\, skip\, cartwheel\, or saunter 3.14 miles\, which is a little more than a 5K. (It’s the honor system. We won’t know if you spent 3.14 hours on your couch.) You can also go 3.14 kilometers\, furlongs\, acres\, leagues\, or city blocks anywhere you choose! Be sure to wear your Pi K shirt and share your picture on ISC’s socials. \n3. CELEBRATE PI! \nWhen you get to the finish\, we’ll have delicious treats to enjoy in celebration of everything circular. Will they be pies\, bagels\, donuts\, cookies\, flan\, cupcakes??? So many great options so who knows! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 2026 Pi K T-SHIRT is a softstyle unisex cotton tee available in sizes S – 2XL. This year’s collectible tee will be different from the ones shown above from 2019 and 2021 (we don’t have a photo for this year yet). \nPi K Logo – The logo on the front is not some fancy equation. Insiders know it indicates this is a “Pi K” as opposed to a 5K run when everyone goes just a little extra for math. The exponent number indicates that 2026 is our 12th year for the run. \nThe shirt backside makes it clear you know math and how far you went. The line between 3.14 and the ISC logo is not just a divider line. Look closely and you’ll see it’s a long sequence of digits of pi. 🙂 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Details: \nThere is no packet pickup prior to the run but at the finish we’ll have circular treats for you! We will have bag check but we can’t guarantee bathrooms will be available for use or to change clothes. \nT-shirts will be mailed to you in advance so you can wear it to the run if you register by Tuesday 2/24. If you register between 2/25 – 3/14\, your shirt will arrive about 2 weeks after Pi Day. \nWeather: This is Chicago. Weather on March 14 could be warm and sunny\, or cold\, windy and wet. You’ve seen it all and you know how to dress accordingly. The Pi K takes place rain\, snow\, or shine. Run will only be cancelled due to severe weather conditions\, in which case you’ll be emailed with updates. Even if the run is cancelled\, the post party probably won’t be because we’re not savages!! There are no refunds as you’ll still get your shirt.
