SUMMARY:ETOPiA Production of “Copenhagen”
DESCRIPTION:A play by Michael Frayn\, produced jointly with the University of Chicago’s STAGE Lab\, this year’s annual ETOPiA production is the play “Copenhagen”. \nDuring World War II\, the friendship of two Nobel Prize-winning physicists is tested by the prospect of providing Nazi Germany with the atomic bomb. A mysterious 1941 visit by German physicist Werner Heisenberg to his Danish mentor Niels Bohr leads to an explosive argument—the consequences of which may determine the fate of nations. SUMMARY:Unearth Science Festival - SciComm: The Art (and Science) of Reaching New Audiences
DESCRIPTION:Are you struggling to get the word out about the importance of conservation and biodiversity to peers\, policy makers\, or the public? Learn from some of the best science communicators how they craft messages that resonate and deliver content in ways that are fun\, engaging\, and informative. Presenters will focus on multiple communication pathways from traditional and social media to innovative art-science partnerships. Come learn how to communicate complex topics in new and compelling ways. \nLearn how we can all become advocates for science through communication and the arts at SciComm: The Art (and Science) of Reaching New Audiences on Friday April 20 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM. \nThis Janet Meakin Poor symposium will focus on science communications in all its forms. We are especially excited about the afternoon speakers\, all of whom represent ways to create alternative entry points to STEM through the arts – spoken word\, interactive sculpture\, and collaborative visual creations (artists from the three exhibitions below will be speaking). (fee applies) \nCome for the day\, stay for the evening. Enjoy special pricing when registering for both the Reaching New Audiences symposium and our Science Poetry Slam.

DESCRIPTION:The Taste of Science Festival continues at The Beer Bistro. Come nosh on tasty science bites\, being served up in your favorite bars! \nUniversity of Chicago associate professor Liz Moyer\, PhD will discuss “The Earth’s Energy and Climate Futures.” \n\n\nEnergy is the foundation of the human economy\, but our energy system is now so large that its waste product\, CO2\, can alter global climate. We’ll discuss the scale of humanity’s activities\, their physical effects\, and possible energy technologies of the future.  One goal is to provide simple physical frameworks and back-of-the-envelope calculations that can lead to core insights (for example\, that biofuels cannot be a solution\, or that CO2 tends to make climate less rather than more variable). \n\n\n\n\n  \nEvent information: \n\nThis event is open to all ages\nDrinks and food will be available for purchase\nTickets are free\, $5.00 suggested donation at the door\n\nGet your free tickets here.

SUMMARY:Getting wired: restoring movement and sensation through a brain-computer interface (Taste of Science @ Baderbrau)
DESCRIPTION:The Taste of Science Festival continues at The Beer Bistro. Come nosh on tasty science bites\, being served up in your favorite bars! \nUniversity of Chicago associate professor Sliman Bensmaia\, PhD will discuss “Biological and bionic hands: Natural neural coding and artificial perception.” \n\n\nOur ability to manipulate objects dexterously relies fundamentally on sensory signals originating from the hand. To restore motor function with upper-limb neuroprostheses requires that somatosensory feedback be provided to the tetraplegic patient or amputee. To this end\, we develop approaches to intuitively convey sensory information that is critical for object manipulation through electrical stimulation of the sensory areas of the brain. \n\n\n\n\nNorthwestern professor Lee Miller\, PhD will discuss “We zap the body electric: Restoring movement following paralysis with brain-controlled functional electrical stimulation.” \nSpinal cord injury is devastating\, and there is currently no real treatment. Ultimately we’d want to regrow the spinal cord\, but in the meantime\, it is now possible to literally reconnect the brain and muscles electronically. I will describe experiments in which we eavesdrop directly on signals in a monkey’s brain\, translate them into appropriate control signals\, and send them to an electrical stimulator that causes muscles to contract\, thereby allowing voluntary control of paralyzed muscles. \nEvent information: \n\nThis event is open to all ages\nDrinks and food will be available for purchase\nTickets are free\, $5.00 suggested donation at the door\n\nGet your free tickets here.

SUMMARY:Is it all in the genes? (Taste of Science @ Baderbrau)
DESCRIPTION:The Taste of Science Festival continues at The Beer Bistro. Come nosh on tasty science bites\, being served up in your favorite bars! \nUniversity of Chicago professor John Novembre\, PhD will discuss “Genes and geography in humans.” \n\n\nModern tools for DNA sequencing are allowing the rapid accumulation of large data sets with observations of human genetic variation. How can we visualize the underlying patterns in such large-scale data? What do these patterns teach us about our history as a species on this planet? In this talk\, we’ll explore answers to these questions and improve our understanding of evolutionary processes that shape both human adaptations\, disease\, and personalized ancestry. \n\n\n\n\nUniversity of Chicago professor Darrel Waggoner\, MD will discuss “Your genes’ impact on your medical care: myths and reality.” \nGenetic testing seems to be the future\, but how much can we actually determine and what is used in today’s hospitals? We will talk about how genetic information is transforming diagnostics and clinical care\, as well as address some of the myths surrounding genetic testing. \nEvent information: \n\nThis event is open to all ages\nDrinks and food will be available for purchase\nTickets are free\, $5.00 suggested donation at the door\n\nGet your free tickets here.

SUMMARY:"Being Together in Place" at Garfield Park Conservatory
DESCRIPTION:To accompany her installation The Persistence of the Unsorted\, Artist in Residence Claire Pentecost presents special guests geographers Soren Larsen and Jay Johnson\, authors of  Being Together in Place for a discussion of the agency of place itself at the Garfield Park Conservatory. \nFrom the authors: \n“Coexistence begins in place—the places we come from and call home\, the places we care for and struggle over\, the places that sustain us\, the places we share. We call this book “being-together-in-place”¹ because whether we acknowledge it or not\, place convenes our being together\, bringing human and nonhuman communities into the shared predicaments of life\, livelihood\, and land. Place calls us to the challenge of living together. At root\, this is a challenge of worldviews involving many different ways of being whose relationships are interdependent yet asymmetrical\, sometimes harmonious and other times in conflict….” \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:“Ether Day: How the Discovery of Anesthesia in 1846 Changed Surgery Forever” - #HistMed Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Join Robert G. Dorfman of Northwestern University\, as a part of the International #HistMed Lecture Series at the International Museum of Surgical Science. \nDr. Dorfman will present “Ether Day: How the Discovery of Anesthesia in 1846 Changed Surgery Forever.” Anesthesia is now administered safely each year to millions of patients throughout the world\, but this was not always the case. While surgery under excruciating conditions was the norm prior to the discovery of ether anesthesia\, it continued to be commonplace for decades following the introduction of anesthesia as a result of initial resistance to the new substance among doctors and patients alike. \nLearn more during this free lunchtime lecture! \n\nThis lecture is free with admission to the museum. \n\nRegister here. \n
