And everyone will be too drunk to mock you for reading every letter of every plaque! \nOur outstanding talks: \nWarring Theories: How Easter Island Makes Fools of Us All\nby Bridget Holcomb \nThe most remote inhabited place on the planet has been studied by scientists for over a century. There are enormous disagreements over what happened on Easter Island\, but the overwhelming amount of evidence is clear: we keep finding new ways to make fools of ourselves. \nBridget Holcomb is a proud representative of Duluth’s Nerd Nite. Her background is in biology and environmental studies\, and has had a low-key obsession with Easter Island since she was 12. She is no longer 12. \nFecal transplants: Real science or a load of crap?\nby Cat Plunkett \nThe role of gut bacteria in health and disease is a hot topic in current medical research. I’ll take you through the science behind fecal microbial transplants as a treatment for disease. We’ll touch on how they work\, the limitations of this treatment and some of the future directions that it may be heading\, including how you could turn your poop into cash. \nCatherine Plunkett is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Northwestern University. My research focuses on understanding how early life bacterial exposures affect the development of allergic diseases. \nHistoric Graffiti: Fear\, Hope\, and Faith in Stone\nby Crystal Hollis \nIf walls could speak what would they say about buildings hundreds of years old? Historic graffiti are the stories of the regular everyday person hidden in plain sight in numerous historic buildings throughout the UK. From monsters to ships to protective signs that ward off evil\, these fascinating inscriptions offer a glimpse into the everyday life and world of people from hundreds of years ago.\nCrystal Hollis has been professionally staring at walls for several years now. Her work has taken her all over the UK\, and she has presented on graffiti all over the USA – most recently NYC. She begins her PhD this autumn.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Northwestern’s Chicago campus for our second annual large community-building event\, where we will celebrate women’s progress in STEM on International Women’s Day and explore the theme of implicit bias\, a critical obstacle to STEM diversity and inclusion. Given the strong evidence that unconscious bias is a driving force behind ongoing gender disparities in STEM (Hill\, Corbett et al. 2010)\, our overall goal will be to raise awareness of unconscious bias and its effects on ourselves and others while developing counter-strategies. \n\nThe day will commence with an interactive implicit bias workshop\, entitled “Navigating Gender Bias in STEM from the Inside Out“\, followed by lunch and refreshments.\nWe will next shine a spotlight on exceptional local women leaders in STEM and learn first-hand their experiences and motivations on their career path during a series of short presentations.\nThe keynote presentation will be delivered by Dr. Eve Fine\, a leader from UW-Madison’s WISELI\, a research center at the forefront of evidence-based solutions for implicit bias and increasing female STEM faculty.\nParticipants will have the opportunity to interact directly with invited speakers and additional invited local women leaders in STEM at the closing networking reception\, where appetizers and drinks will be served!\n\nTogether\, our upcoming Chicago Women in STEM Symposium and interdisciplinary mentoring program\, STEM Circuits\, aim to place Chicago on the forefront of positive change by fostering a sustainable inclusive local community. DESCRIPTION:Professor Wendy Freedman is one of eight University Professors at the University of Chicago appointed by the president of\nthe university. For eleven years (2003-2014) she served as the Crawford H. Greenewalt Director of the Carnegie\nObservatories in Pasadena\, California. A native of Toronto\, Canada\, she received her doctorate in astronomy and\nastrophysics from the University of Toronto in 1984. She received a Carnegie Fellowship at the Observatories in 1984\,\njoined the permanent faculty in 1987\, and was appointed Director in 2003. From 2003-2015\, she served as chair of the\nBoard of Directors for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT)\, a 25-m optical telescope scheduled for construction in Chile\nin 2022.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Katrin Heitmann\nPhysicist\, Computational Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory \nHost: Claude-André Faucher-Giguère \nTalk Abstract: Cosmology — the study of the origin\, evolution\, and constituents of the Universe — is now entering one of its most scientifically exciting phases. Three decades of surveying the sky have culminated in the celebrated “Cosmological Standard Model”. Yet\, two of its key pillars\, dark matter and dark energy — together accounting for 95% of the mass-energy of the Universe — remain mysterious. Next-generation observatories will open new routes to understand the true nature of the “Dark Universe”. These observations will pose tremendous challenges on many fronts — from the sheer size of the data that will be collected (more than a hundred Petabytes) to its modeling and interpretation. The interpretation of the data requires sophisticated simulations on the world’s largest supercomputers. The cost of these simulations\, the uncertainties in our modeling abilities\, and the fact that we have only one Universe that we can observe opposed to carrying out controlled experiments\, all come together to create a major test for statistical methods of data analysis. \nIn this talk I will give a very brief introduction to the Dark Universe and outline the challenges ahead. I will discuss an ambitious end-to-end simulation project that attempts to provide a faithful view of the Universe as seen through a telescope that is currently under construction\, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. Then I will describe how complex\, large-scale simulations will be used in order to extract the cosmological information from ongoing and next-generation surveys. \nFree & Open to the Public\nNo Registration or Ticket Needed

Come learn why and discuss what you can do to help\, right here in Chicago! \nJoin Brittany Buckles\, trained Entomologist and Education & Outreach Coordinator with Bike a Bee\, for this hour-long class consisting of an educational presentation and discussion activities all about pollinators! You’ll also be able to view honey bees up close in Plant Chicago’s classroom observation hive. \nBike a Bee is an urban beekeeping project with about 50 hives on the south side of Chicago\, some of which are on the roof of our home\, The Plant. Most of Bike a Bee’s hives are placed in community gardens\, schools\, urban farms\, and other shared\, visible spaces. They believe having bees where people can see them enriches the community’s understanding of bees and the natural systems around them; children\, teens\, and adults learn through observation and coexistence that bees are our friends\, not our enemies!

This year we’re bringing back one of our most popular and talked about events – paintings with modified bacteria! You’ll work with a simple and safe laboratory strain of E. coli that has been engineered to produce colorful fluorescent proteins from marine organisms like jellyfish\, and you’ll paint them onto a petri dish that contains all the nutrients to support their growth. \nWe’ll provide the dishes\, the bacterial strains engineered to fluoresce different colors (red\, green\, white)\, and some tools\, tips and tricks. All you need to do is bring some festive cheer and your best idea for some bioart! At the end of the night we’ll take the plates\, allow the bacteria to grow and form your designs\, and then share high-resolution photographs of your work. \nWe’ll be bringing about 40 plates\, so make sure to be prompt; plates are first come first serve.
