SUMMARY:The Earth's energy and climate futures (Taste of Science @ The Beer Bistro)
DESCRIPTION:The Taste of Science Festival continues at The Beer Bistro. Come nosh on tasty science bites\, being served up in your favorite bars! \nUniversity of Chicago associate professor Liz Moyer\, PhD will discuss “The Earth’s Energy and Climate Futures.” \n\n\nEnergy is the foundation of the human economy\, but our energy system is now so large that its waste product\, CO2\, can alter global climate. We’ll discuss the scale of humanity’s activities\, their physical effects\, and possible energy technologies of the future.  One goal is to provide simple physical frameworks and back-of-the-envelope calculations that can lead to core insights (for example\, that biofuels cannot be a solution\, or that CO2 tends to make climate less rather than more variable). \n\n\n\n\n  \nEvent information: \n\nThis event is open to all ages\nDrinks and food will be available for purchase\nTickets are free\, $5.00 suggested donation at the door\n\nGet your free tickets here.

SUMMARY:Getting wired: restoring movement and sensation through a brain-computer interface (Taste of Science @ Baderbrau)
DESCRIPTION:The Taste of Science Festival continues at The Beer Bistro. Come nosh on tasty science bites\, being served up in your favorite bars! \nUniversity of Chicago associate professor Sliman Bensmaia\, PhD will discuss “Biological and bionic hands: Natural neural coding and artificial perception.” \n\n\nOur ability to manipulate objects dexterously relies fundamentally on sensory signals originating from the hand. To restore motor function with upper-limb neuroprostheses requires that somatosensory feedback be provided to the tetraplegic patient or amputee. To this end\, we develop approaches to intuitively convey sensory information that is critical for object manipulation through electrical stimulation of the sensory areas of the brain. \n\n\n\n\nNorthwestern professor Lee Miller\, PhD will discuss “We zap the body electric: Restoring movement following paralysis with brain-controlled functional electrical stimulation.” \nSpinal cord injury is devastating\, and there is currently no real treatment. Ultimately we’d want to regrow the spinal cord\, but in the meantime\, it is now possible to literally reconnect the brain and muscles electronically. I will describe experiments in which we eavesdrop directly on signals in a monkey’s brain\, translate them into appropriate control signals\, and send them to an electrical stimulator that causes muscles to contract\, thereby allowing voluntary control of paralyzed muscles. \nEvent information: \n\nThis event is open to all ages\nDrinks and food will be available for purchase\nTickets are free\, $5.00 suggested donation at the door\n\nGet your free tickets here.

SUMMARY:Is it all in the genes? (Taste of Science @ Baderbrau)
DESCRIPTION:The Taste of Science Festival continues at The Beer Bistro. Come nosh on tasty science bites\, being served up in your favorite bars! \nUniversity of Chicago professor John Novembre\, PhD will discuss “Genes and geography in humans.” \n\n\nModern tools for DNA sequencing are allowing the rapid accumulation of large data sets with observations of human genetic variation. How can we visualize the underlying patterns in such large-scale data? What do these patterns teach us about our history as a species on this planet? In this talk\, we’ll explore answers to these questions and improve our understanding of evolutionary processes that shape both human adaptations\, disease\, and personalized ancestry. \n\n\n\n\nUniversity of Chicago professor Darrel Waggoner\, MD will discuss “Your genes’ impact on your medical care: myths and reality.” \nGenetic testing seems to be the future\, but how much can we actually determine and what is used in today’s hospitals? We will talk about how genetic information is transforming diagnostics and clinical care\, as well as address some of the myths surrounding genetic testing. \nEvent information: \n\nThis event is open to all ages\nDrinks and food will be available for purchase\nTickets are free\, $5.00 suggested donation at the door\n\nGet your free tickets here.

SUMMARY:"Being Together in Place" at Garfield Park Conservatory
DESCRIPTION:To accompany her installation The Persistence of the Unsorted\, Artist in Residence Claire Pentecost presents special guests geographers Soren Larsen and Jay Johnson\, authors of  Being Together in Place for a discussion of the agency of place itself at the Garfield Park Conservatory. \nFrom the authors: \n“Coexistence begins in place—the places we come from and call home\, the places we care for and struggle over\, the places that sustain us\, the places we share. We call this book “being-together-in-place”¹ because whether we acknowledge it or not\, place convenes our being together\, bringing human and nonhuman communities into the shared predicaments of life\, livelihood\, and land. Place calls us to the challenge of living together. At root\, this is a challenge of worldviews involving many different ways of being whose relationships are interdependent yet asymmetrical\, sometimes harmonious and other times in conflict….” \nThis event is free and open to the public. Space is limited\, please register in advance.

SUMMARY:ISC Domecast of the Kavli Fulldome Lecture\, presented by the Adler Planetarium (#ChiSciFest)
DESCRIPTION:ISC is partnering with the Adler Planetarium to present a Virtual Reality Domecast of their Spring Kavli Lecture Series\, entitled “Our Planetary Experiment” \nThe increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide due to burning coal\, oil\, and gas represents an unprecedented experiment on the planet Earth. We don’t know exactly how the experiment will unfold\, but the history of Earth and its neighboring planets provide hints of what’s to come: Over the next few decades\, Earth’s atmosphere will return to a state not seen for millions of years. \nThe geologic record raises many questions that climate science has yet to answer\, and these surprises may expose our greatest vulnerabilities. Taken together\, the evidence suggests that the coming century will test the human species like never before\, challenging our ingenuity and capacity for innovation as we strive to fend off a global catastrophe. \nJoin Dr. Daniel P. Schrag as he discusses this planetary experiment and how the future of our planet may unfold. \nDaniel Schrag is the Sturgis Hooper Professor of Geology\, Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering at Harvard University\, and director of the Harvard University Center for the Environment. \nGuests will receive Google Cardboard VR viewers\, and will join with others at the Adler as we view a simulcast of the lecture\, which starts promptly at 7:30pm. \nWe encourage guests to download the YouTube App and the Google Cardboard app on their phones prior to arriving. \nPurchase tickets here \n  \n\nIllinois Science Council invites you to the 4th annual Chicago Science Festival — a celebration of the wow-inspiring\, mind-expanding\, human-benefitting awesomeness that is STEM (science\, technology\, engineering & math) in the Chicago area. SUMMARY:Project L - a Celebration of SciArt (#ChiSciFest)
DESCRIPTION:Art and science are both fields of questioning\, investigating\, and revealing aspects of the world around us and of human nature. What happens when they meet? This exhibition presents a selection of SciArt\, or science-based art\, from artists across Chicagoland who are engaged in exploring the point at which art and science come together to complement or confront the other. Through a variety of media\, these works illustrate the intriguing new realities that result: the objectivity of scientific imagery is distorted and challenged; the natural world is celebrated on canvas and in creative\, playful sculpture; and a theater production suddenly becomes more magical. New physical and mental landscapes emerge and combine to provoke and inspire entirely different ways of thinking. \nIn a Pop-Up trio of events\, Project L aims to challenge participants’ perception and initiate an open dialogue about SciArt and the common space between science and art. An exhibition of SciArt; workshops; and an ongoing dialogue about the connections found between the two fields are the three pillars of Project L.\nFriday\, May 11       7:30 – 10:00 pm     Opening celebration (art\, science & drinks!)\, part of the Pilsen Neighborhood “Second Friday” Art Walk; FREE and open to the public; no registration necessary (map). \nSaturday\, May 12      6:30 – 8:30 pm     Exhibition is free and open to the public \nSunday\, May 13       10:00 am – 12 noon   Workshops for kids and adults. \n10:00am-11:15am:  sciart Workshop for kids\nKids will have the opportunity to build their own landscape in between art and science using materials from our daily life. With the guidance of the instructor\, they will talk about the SciArt commonplace: what happens when we are just creative without using the science or art boxes in our minds?\nAdvance reservations are required here. Limited spots.  Ages: 4-7\nTickets: $8 \n11:30-1:00: sciart workshop for adults\nWhat happens in the common space of science and art? The human experience will determine the form of the new landscape. In this workshop\, the participants will approach this landscape as if it was a labyrinth\, and they will create their own version of a maze. How easy is to navigate? Art\, science\, perception\, time and methodology are some of the keywords to find your way out.\nLeading instructor: Maria Kokkori\, Associate Researcher for Scholarly Initiatives at the Art Institute of Chicago and Lecturer in the Department of Art History at the University of Chicago.\nInstructor: Filippa Christofalou\, Curator of Education and Programming at The Drama Science Lab.\nAdvance reservations here. Limited spots. Tickets: $8 \nSunday\, May 13      5:30 – 7:00 pm     Exhibition is free and open to the public \n  \nSponsored by ISC parter\, The Drama Science Lab\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nIllinois Science Council invites you to the 4th annual Chicago Science Festival — a celebration of the wow-inspiring\, mind-expanding\, human-benefitting awesomeness that is STEM (science\, technology\, engineering & math) in the Chicago area.
