SUMMARY:Film Screening: Rise of the Warrior Apes
DESCRIPTION:This event is a screening of the award-winning documentary Rise of the Warrior Apes\, featuring a question and answer session with collaborating scientist Dr. John Mitani. \n“Filmed over 23 years\, Rise of the Warrior Apes tells the epic story of an extraordinary troop of chimpanzees in Ngogo\, Uganda – featuring four mighty warriors who rule through moral ambiguity\, questionable politics\, strategic alliances\, and destroyed trust. \nThe warrior apes\, who are known as the largest troop of chimpanzees ever discovered\, control a vast empire and reign with terror through war\, politics and alliances. Built upon over 20 years of remarkable storylines – from their emergence as young adults culminating in their total dominance – Rise of the Warrior Apes provides a fresh and uncensored perspective on these magnificent and sometimes terrifying animals. \nResearchers\, who first started studying and filming these apes in 1993\, were determined to understand how they had established a unit more than three times the size of anything ever seen in the wild before. Over more than two decades\, their dedication\, extraordinary capacity as story-tellers and remarkable archive of film – supplemented with new specially shot material – reveal groundbreaking insights into animal behaviour and perhaps even into human evolution.” — Discovery Channel \nAfter the screening\, join Dr. John Mitani for a behind-the-scenes look at the research that informed the narrative behind the stunning visuals in this fascinating documentary.

SUMMARY:Kavli Fulldome Lecture Series: The Cosmos in a Heartbeat
DESCRIPTION:A human lifetime is more than a hundred million times shorter than the current age of the Universe. Whether you are a professional astronomer\, or a casual backyard stargazer\, you have only a few decades to drink it all in—to wonder how it works and how you got here. \nThe cosmos is full of strange happenings that we sometimes are lucky enough to witness because we happened to be paying attention to the stories the Universe is telling us. These tales are carried on bursts of light\, showers of subatomic particles\, and the faint whisperings of gravity\, and every day that passes\, we’re getting better at deciphering them. \nIn our lifetimes\, we will only ever have a glimpse of the cosmos. But that glimpse is enough to transform our perceptions in dramatic ways and to answer the oldest questions we have about what the Universe is doing all around us.

SUMMARY:Clean Energy Community Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:The clean energy transition is underway in Illinois! As we continue to develop clean energy policy proposals\, we want to hear from you about your priorities\, concerns\, and needs related to the environment\, energy and the economy! How can the transition to clean energy best fit Chicago’s needs? How can we best leverage new jobs in the clean energy economy? Join the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) and Plant Chicago for an open discussion about what’s next for Illinois. \nMore about Citizens Utility Board: \nCUB challenges utility rate increases\, fights for rate reductions and refunds of overcharges\, and appeals unfair regulatory decisions in the courts. CUB also promotes tougher consumer protection laws in the state legislature\, where rules governing the utilities are written\, and publishes consumer\, education materials. CUB also is working to ensure that the introduction of competition into the utility industry will provide real benefits for real people\, and not just added headaches and hassles.

SUMMARY:Chicago Suburbs Harper Lecture: Radically Rethinking Dark Matter
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Dan Hooper\, professor of astronomy and astrophysics\n\n\n\nThe overwhelming majority of cosmologists are confident that most of the matter in our universe is not made up of atoms but rather of a substance known as dark matter. We do not know\, however\, exactly what dark matter is\, how it behaves\, or how it was created in the early universe. In this lecture\, Dan Hooper will explain why we are so sure that dark matter exists and describe how recent experimental results suggest that it may be very different than we had long imagined. \nQuestions?\nContact alumniassociation@uchicago.edu or 773.702.2150. \nEvent Details\n2:00 p.m. Registration and networking\n2:30 p.m. Presentation and discussion\n3:30 p.m. Reception \n$20/person\n$10/Maroon Loyalty Society member or recent graduate (College alumni of the past 10 years and graduate alumni of the past five years)\nFree for current academic year graduates and current students\nTwo complimentary registrations for members of the Chicago\, Harper\, Odyssey\, and Phoenix philanthropic societies \nLearn more about UChicago giving societies. \nParking Information\nComplimentary self-parking is available.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Understanding Lipoproteins: Research\, Treatment and Relationship to Cholesterol
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Monday\, November 12\, 2018\, 5:30 – 8:00pm\nFree and open to the public. \nDoors open 5:30pm. \n\nLipoproteins\, though microscopically small\, have great implications on our body’s overall health. Many lipoproteins accumulate through dietary intake\, while others are hereditary. Understanding Lipoproteins: Research\, Treatment and Relationship to Cholesterol educates visitors on the three main types of lipoproteins: High-Density Lipoprotein\, Low-Density Lipoprotein and Lipoprotein(a). While all three are comprised of both lipids and proteins\, they have vastly differing effects on the body. In addition to learning more about these key lipoproteins\, this exhibition informs us of their implications on our cardiovascular health. \nAngelo Scanu\, M.D.\, a physician and researcher at the University of Chicago between the years 1963-2011\, was a major contributor of what we know today about lipoproteins. He advanced our understanding of the High-Density Lipoprotein and the Lipoprotein(a) particles. In 1958\, Dr. Scanu was the first person to describe the biochemistry of the High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL)\, formerly known as “good cholesterol.” Throughout his research career\, he remained passionate about treating patients with lipoprotein complications. The first lipid clinic in Chicago was opened at the University of Chicago in 1982 with Dr. Scanu as the Director. The laboratory and clinic were home to where Dr. Scanu and his team advised patients and carried out much of their critical lipoprotein research. \nShowcasing how lipoproteins function\, together with the history of lipoprotein research and treatment\, Understanding Lipoproteins: Research\, Treatment and Relationship to Cholesterol features a re-creation of Dr. Scanu’s research station alongside archival material from the first Lipid Clinic—illustrating how even the smallest particles can have the greatest impacts on our health.

SUMMARY:Art of Science - Gravitational Lensing: Through the Cosmic Mirror
DESCRIPTION:Gravitational Lensing — Through the Cosmic Looking Glass\nPresented by Prof. Chihway Chang\nUniversity of Chicago\nPresentation begins at 8 pm \nFree event! \nExciting science\, art and socializing\nDonation bar\nVegan snacks \n  \nGravity bends light\, in a similar way to a wine glass on the dinner table distorting the light of a candle behind it. This phenomenon is called gravitational lensing. For cosmologists\, this is one of the most straightforward ways to measure the distribution of  “stuff\,” or mass\, in the Universe. \nProfessor Chang will describe several different types of gravitational lensing and present results from some current experiments.

SUMMARY:NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC: SYMPHONY FOR OUR WORLD @ THE AUDITORIUM
DESCRIPTION:National Geographic: Symphony for Our World is a breathtaking live\, multimedia journey through some of the world’s most incredible wildlife spectacles. The orchestral performance combines National Geographic’s stunning natural history footage with narration from Hamilton’s Tony- and Grammy award-winning artist Daveed Diggs\, and an original symphony created by Hans Zimmer’s Emmy- and BAFTA award-nominated Bleeding Fingers Music collective. \nDriven by a five-part composition\, it pairs artistry with science as it brings viewers from the depths of the sea\, up to the coastlines\, onto land\, through mountains\, and finally into the sky. Each environment will be accompanied by a different orchestral movement\, resulting in a powerful musical tribute to the beauty and wonders of our wild world.

SUMMARY:CHIentist - Connections Matter
DESCRIPTION:The 4th Annual CHIentist: Connections Matter formal networking event will be held Nov. 26th from 6:00-8:30pm at MATTER. \nLike years past\, this event will be heavy with networking. We’ve also lined up three great speakers to give short TED-like talks on Data Drive Precision Medicine and how using big data and research information to personalize medicine transcends all facets of research and clinical applications. RSVP and details here. \nOur theme this year is Data Drive Precision Medicine\, which is more than just a string of buzzwords. Using big data and research information to personalize medicine transcends all facets of research and clinical applications. After all\, a given effect may be true for the population\, but it needs to hold true when the “n” is one. Being able to fine tune a therapy for the individual presents are particularly difficult but important frontier. Join us to find out how this frameshift in thinking is rippling through academia\, industry\, and healthcare. \nThis signature event will gather stakeholders within the life sciences from all across the greater Chicago area. It is a unique networking opportunity and will bring together researchers\, entrepreneurs and industry professionals in order to create connections between these often segmented communities. The goals of this event are to: \n\nProvide an accessible platform for local researchers and professionals to network\nFoster cross-talk between professional niches\nEncourage communication between various sectors of the life sciences ecosystem\n\nThe agenda for the evening will include both structured (‘speed’) and freestyle networking\, in addition to two short talks by prominent members of the Chicago Life Sciences Community. \nThe Program: \n6:00 – Reception and informal networking \n6:50 – Speakers \nCasey Frankenberger – Rush University Medical Center\, Chief Research Informatics Officer \nPiers Nash – Founder\, Sympatic; General Manager\, Nash Strategy and Innovation \nPeter Kissinger – co-founder and CEO\, Phlebotics\, Inc.; founder and former CEO\, Bioanalytical Systems Inc. (BASi) \n7:20 – Networking \n8:20 – Closing remarks \nSpace is limited\, if you can’t attend\, please cancel your RVSP through Eventbrite if you cannot make it. \nDrinks and appetizers will be provided at No Charge\, with special thanks to Lagunitas Brewing Co.

SUMMARY:Flu Shots & Drink Shots — Immunology @ a Bar! - 2018-11-27
DESCRIPTION:Get your flu shot – Get a drink shot! Seriously. \nIt’s easy to procrastinate getting your annual flu shot. If you haven’t done it yet\, ISC is making it soooo easy for you! Even if you already got yours\, you certainly have friends who haven’t\, maybe because they’re nervous\, skeptical\, or think they don’t need it. You need to bring them to this program where they can get all their questions answered\, in person\, by real science experts. \nYou’ll be rewarded with a free drink as well for being a public health hero! \nHave a drink\, learn the real deal about vaccines\, then get your flu shot. Done! \nGet answers to these and all your vaccine questions: \n\nHow are antibiotics different from vaccines and how do they work?\nWhy does it have to be a shot and can’t be a pill?\nWhy should I get a vaccine for something as mild as the flu?\nCan’t I get sick from a flu shot? I’m scared of a serious reaction.\nWhy every year? Why not just one good one as a kid like chicken pox?\nLittle babies can’t handle lots of shots because they’re delicate\, right?\nWhy are there vaccines for measles and flu but not Zika\, Ebola\, AIDS\, or Herpes?\nCan’t I just change my diet to boost my immune system and not get sick?\nYour questions!\n\nExperts: \nSusan Ross\, PhD\, Virologist\, Professor at University of Illinois at Chicago \nSteven Piecyk\, Pharmacy Manager Jewel-Osco Pharmacy \nTicket includes 1 free drink (does not need to be a shot; can be a well cocktail\, wine\, house beer\, soda or coffee). Food is available for purchase at Haymarket. \nAfter the discussion\, guests can get their flu shot in the back room from a licensed Osco pharmacist. Most health insurance plans will cover the flu shot at 100%. To get your shot for free\, if you have health insurance\, you must bring your health insurance card\, or just take a picture of it to keep in your phone to show the pharmacist. A couple limited plans (certain HMOs) will not cover a flu shot at 100%. If you have one of those\, or no current insurance\, the shot will cost you an additional fee of $25 maximum. \nQuick & easy; tiny needles; (virtually) painless. Don’t put it off any longer\, and be a public health hero! \nIllinois Science Council thanks to our great partners! \n       \nIf you are interested in event sponsorship\, contact Monica at mmetzler@IllinoisScience.org. \n \n

SUMMARY:"Timefulness" conversation with author Marcia Bjornerud
DESCRIPTION:About the book: Few of us have any conception of the enormous timescales in our planet’s long history\, and this narrow perspective underlies many of the environmental problems we are creating for ourselves. The passage of nine days\, which is how long a drop of water typically stays in Earth’s atmosphere\, is something we can easily grasp. But spans of hundreds of years—the time a molecule of carbon dioxide resides in the atmosphere—approach the limits of our comprehension. Our everyday lives are shaped by processes that vastly predate us\, and our habits will in turn have consequences that will outlast us by generations. Timefulness reveals how knowing the rhythms of Earth’s deep past and conceiving of time as a geologist does can give us the perspective we need for a more sustainable future.\n\n\n \n\n\nMarcia Bjornerud shows how geologists chart the planet’s past\, explaining how we can determine the pace of solid Earth processes such as mountain building and erosion and comparing them with the more unstable rhythms of the oceans and atmosphere. These overlapping rates of change in the Earth system—some fast\, some slow—demand a poly-temporal worldview\, one that Bjornerud calls “timefulness.” She explains why timefulness is vital in the Anthropocene\, this human epoch of accelerating planetary change\, and proposes sensible solutions for building a more time-literate society.\n\n\n \n\n\nThis compelling book presents a new way of thinking about our place in time\, enabling us to make decisions on multigenerational timescales. The lifespan of Earth may seem unfathomable compared to the brevity of human existence\, but this view of time denies our deep roots in Earth’s history—and the magnitude of our effects on the planet.\n\n\n \n\n\nAbout the author: Marcia Bjornerud is professor of geology and environmental studies at Lawrence University. She is the author of Reading the Rocks: The Autobiography of the Earth and is a contributing writer for Elements\, the New Yorker’s science and technology blog.\n\nAbout the interlocutor: Monica Rico is Associate Professor of History at Lawrence University in Appleton\, Wisconsin\, where she has taught since 2001 and received the Faculty Award for Excellence in Research in 2014. Her research interests include early American history\, environmental history\, gender history\, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She published her book Nature’s Noblemen: Transatlantic Masculinities and the Nineteenth-century American West in 2013 with Yale University Press. Her current research concerns the relationship between art\, science\, and gender in the early United States. She was recently selected to participate in the Bright Institute at Knox College\, a three year American history research program. Rico served as President of the Board of Directors of the Outagamie Country Historical Society for seven years\, is active in numerous community organizations\, and was named one of the Fox Cities’ “Future Fifteen” emerging leaders in 2014.\n\n\nRSVP requested here.

SUMMARY:Bacterial Art Holiday Spectacular
DESCRIPTION:Join ChiTownBio for our end-of-year meeting on Thursday\, December 13th at 7 PM. This year we’re bringing back one of our most popular and talked about events – paintings with modified bacteria! You’ll work with a simple and safe laboratory strain of E. coli that has been engineered to produce colorful fluorescent proteins from marine organisms like jellyfish\, and you’ll paint them onto a petri dish that contains all the nutrients to support their growth. \nWe’ll provide the dishes\, the bacterial strains engineered to fluoresce different colors (red\, green\, white)\, and some tools\, tips and tricks. All you need to do is bring some festive cheer and your best idea for some bioart! At the end of the night we’ll take the plates\, allow the bacteria to grow and form your designs\, and then share high-resolution photographs of your work. \nWe’ll be bringing about 40 plates\, so make sure to be prompt; plates are first come first serve.
