SUMMARY:"Timefulness" conversation with author Marcia Bjornerud
DESCRIPTION:About the book: Few of us have any conception of the enormous timescales in our planet’s long history\, and this narrow perspective underlies many of the environmental problems we are creating for ourselves. The passage of nine days\, which is how long a drop of water typically stays in Earth’s atmosphere\, is something we can easily grasp. But spans of hundreds of years—the time a molecule of carbon dioxide resides in the atmosphere—approach the limits of our comprehension. Our everyday lives are shaped by processes that vastly predate us\, and our habits will in turn have consequences that will outlast us by generations. Timefulness reveals how knowing the rhythms of Earth’s deep past and conceiving of time as a geologist does can give us the perspective we need for a more sustainable future.\n\n\n \n\n\nMarcia Bjornerud shows how geologists chart the planet’s past\, explaining how we can determine the pace of solid Earth processes such as mountain building and erosion and comparing them with the more unstable rhythms of the oceans and atmosphere. These overlapping rates of change in the Earth system—some fast\, some slow—demand a poly-temporal worldview\, one that Bjornerud calls “timefulness.” She explains why timefulness is vital in the Anthropocene\, this human epoch of accelerating planetary change\, and proposes sensible solutions for building a more time-literate society.\n\n\n \n\n\nThis compelling book presents a new way of thinking about our place in time\, enabling us to make decisions on multigenerational timescales. The lifespan of Earth may seem unfathomable compared to the brevity of human existence\, but this view of time denies our deep roots in Earth’s history—and the magnitude of our effects on the planet.\n\n\n \n\n\nAbout the author: Marcia Bjornerud is professor of geology and environmental studies at Lawrence University. She is the author of Reading the Rocks: The Autobiography of the Earth and is a contributing writer for Elements\, the New Yorker’s science and technology blog.\n\nAbout the interlocutor: Monica Rico is Associate Professor of History at Lawrence University in Appleton\, Wisconsin\, where she has taught since 2001 and received the Faculty Award for Excellence in Research in 2014. Her research interests include early American history\, environmental history\, gender history\, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She published her book Nature’s Noblemen: Transatlantic Masculinities and the Nineteenth-century American West in 2013 with Yale University Press. Her current research concerns the relationship between art\, science\, and gender in the early United States. She was recently selected to participate in the Bright Institute at Knox College\, a three year American history research program. You’ll work with a simple and safe laboratory strain of E. coli that has been engineered to produce colorful fluorescent proteins from marine organisms like jellyfish\, and you’ll paint them onto a petri dish that contains all the nutrients to support their growth. \nWe’ll provide the dishes\, the bacterial strains engineered to fluoresce different colors (red\, green\, white)\, and some tools\, tips and tricks. All you need to do is bring some festive cheer and your best idea for some bioart! At the end of the night we’ll take the plates\, allow the bacteria to grow and form your designs\, and then share high-resolution photographs of your work. \nWe’ll be bringing about 40 plates\, so make sure to be prompt; plates are first come first serve.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Katrin Heitmann\nPhysicist\, Computational Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory \nHost: Claude-André Faucher-Giguère \nTalk Abstract: Cosmology — the study of the origin\, evolution\, and constituents of the Universe — is now entering one of its most scientifically exciting phases. Three decades of surveying the sky have culminated in the celebrated “Cosmological Standard Model”. Yet\, two of its key pillars\, dark matter and dark energy — together accounting for 95% of the mass-energy of the Universe — remain mysterious. Next-generation observatories will open new routes to understand the true nature of the “Dark Universe”. These observations will pose tremendous challenges on many fronts — from the sheer size of the data that will be collected (more than a hundred Petabytes) to its modeling and interpretation. The interpretation of the data requires sophisticated simulations on the world’s largest supercomputers. The cost of these simulations\, the uncertainties in our modeling abilities\, and the fact that we have only one Universe that we can observe opposed to carrying out controlled experiments\, all come together to create a major test for statistical methods of data analysis. \nIn this talk I will give a very brief introduction to the Dark Universe and outline the challenges ahead. I will discuss an ambitious end-to-end simulation project that attempts to provide a faithful view of the Universe as seen through a telescope that is currently under construction\, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. A native of Toronto\, Canada\, she received her doctorate in astronomy and\nastrophysics from the University of Toronto in 1984. She received a Carnegie Fellowship at the Observatories in 1984\,\njoined the permanent faculty in 1987\, and was appointed Director in 2003. From 2003-2015\, she served as chair of the\nBoard of Directors for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT)\, a 25-m optical telescope scheduled for construction in Chile\nin 2022.
