Women in Science Symposium

September 23, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Women in Science Symposium

Our speaker for the Women in Science Symposium 2015 is Dr. Rosemary Grant (Emeritus Professor, Princeton University).

Rosemary Grant with her husband Peter Grant has been studying Darwin’s finches on the Galápagos islands since 1973. The fieldwork is designed to understand the causes of an adaptive radiation and process of speci-ation. It combines analyses of archipelago-wide patterns of evolution with detailed investigations of population level processes on two islands, Genovesa and Daphne. The work is a blend of ecology, behavior and genetics. They have collaborated with other investigators to estimate phylogenetic relationships among the species of finches and their relatives on the continent and to identify the genetic mechanisms involved in the development of beaks that vary so conspicuously among the species. The research has been published in three books, “ Evolutionary Dynamics of a Natural Population: the large cactus finch of the Galápagos” (1989) published by University of Chicago Press, and most recently “How and Why Species Multiply” (2008) and “40 years of Evolution” (2014), both published by Princeton University Press.  Rosemary Grant is Research Scholar Emerita at Princeton University. She received her training at Edinburgh University and Uppsala University, and taught at Princeton University.

Dr. Rosemary Grant’s symposium seminar is titled:  “In Search of the Causes of Evolution”

This event is co-sponsored by the A. Watson Armour III scientific seminar series and will be held in Montgomery Ward Lecture Hall (on the ground floor near the West Entrance). If you are coming from outside of the Museum, please enter the Museum through the west entrance and ask the security guard at the door to direct you to Montgomery Ward Lecture Hall to gain access to the seminar room. Everyone is welcome!
