Pi Day “Pi K” Fun Run 2023

11th Annual Celebration of the BEST HOLIDAY EVER!

We’re gearing up for EVERYBODY’S favorite “holiday” — PI DAY! Registration is now open for ISC’s 3.14-mile “Pi K” Fun Run followed by pie-flavored donuts and other circular treats. Mid-March is the perfect time to treat your body to some exercise, and your tastebuds to delicious treats, so join the fun!! All proceeds support the STEM outreach efforts of Illinois Science Council, an independent 501c3 nonprofit based in Chicago that offers creative, engaging science programs for teens and adults. Here’s how it works:

1. REGISTER:

Register early (by midnight Thursday, February 23) and you’ll get this year’s awesome PiK t-shirt mailed directly to you to wear on Pi Day.

Register later (2/24 until midnight March 14) to have your collectible PiK t-shirt mailed after Pi Day.

Group Discount >> If you register a group of 4 or more together, you’ll get $3.14 off each registration!

All registrants receive this year’s coveted Pi K t-shirt they can wear proudly to show their respect for math and support of science outreach.

2. “RUN” 3.14:

In Person: Come to Chicago’s South Loop Fleet Feet Sports running store on Pi Day, March 14. Arrive to be ready for the run start at 6:28pm CT (2 Pi!!) There is gear check at the store and we’ll have a 3.14-mile route mapped out for you. When you get back we’ll have delicious treats to enjoy in celebration of everything circular.

Virtual: You should run, walk, skip, cartwheel, or saunter 3.14 miles, which is a little more than a 5K. (It’s the honor system. We won’t know if you spent 3.14 hours on your couch.) You can also go 3.14 kilometers, furlongs, acres, leagues, or city blocks if you choose, anywhere you choose! Just be sure to wear your Pi K shirt and share your picture on ISC’s social media pages.

Navy blue t-shirt with Pi symbol on the front and the number 3.14 on back above logos for Illinois Science Council and Fleet Feet

ISC’s 2023 Pi K Fun Run T-shirt is a softstyle unisex cotton tee available in sizes XS – 2XL. This year’s collectible tee is in dark navy – a perfect addition to your collection. The logo on the front is not some esoteric equation. Rather, it simply indicates this is a “Pi K” as opposed to a 5K run (a little extra for math), and the exponent number indicates this year, 2023 is our 11th annual run.

The back makes it clear you dig math and how far you ran. The line line between 3.14 and the ISC and FleetFeet logos is not a divider line at all. Up close you’ll note that it’s a long sequence of digits of pi. 🙂

Significance of Pi:

Pi, in case you don’t remember, is abbreviated to 3.14 but continues indefinitely. To date, it has been calculated by computer to over 1.2 trillion digits. Competitions exist for reciting the most digits by memory. As the world’s most famous mathematical constant, Pi is important to many formulas used in mathematics, science, engineering and statistics.

Awesome Sponsors! ISC is thrilled to partner again with Fleet Feet Sports, Chicago’s top running source, for this fun event. If you are interested in partnership opportunities for this, or ISC’s many STEM events, or want to sponsor your company team to run the Pi K, email Monica at PiDay@IllinoisScience.org.
