Revelations in Air – A Discussion on the Sense of Smell – 2021-10-27
ISC is excited to offer this fun and interesting conversation with science writers Jude Stewart and Chris Kemp about our frequently under-appreciated sense of smell.
Overlapping with taste yet larger in scope, smell is the sense that comes closest to pure perception. Smell can collapse space and time, unlocking memories and transporting us to worlds both new and familiar. Yet as clearly as each of us can recognize different smells — the bright tang of citrus, freshly sharpened pencils, parched earth after rain — few of us understand how and why we smell.
Jude Stewart will share her fascinating journey into the weird and wonderful world of smell that became her latest book, “Revelations in Air: A Guidebook to Smell.”
Guests will take their own scent-journey as easy experiments are demonstrated during the program. Register by Saturday, Oct. 23 and you’ll be sent a list of items to have on hand to partake in the experiments to sniff-along with us. It will open your mind – to a new way of experiencing the world!
We’ll allow plenty of time for Q&A for what will certainly be an enlightening conversation!

Christopher Kemp is a molecular biologist. He’s written for Nature, Science, Outside, and New Scientist, and is the author of Floating Gold: A Natural (and Unnatural) History of Ambergris (2012), The Lost Species (2017), and the upcoming Dark and Magical Places: The Neuroscience of Navigation (2022). He lives in Michigan with his wife, three sons, and a dog.
