Saving the Synapse: Synapses Lost and Found in brain development and Alzheimer’s

The University of Chicago’s Grossman Institute of Neuroscience, Quantitative Biology, and Human Behavior presents the Mind and Brain Annual Public Lecture. The speaker, Professor Carla Shatz from Stanford University, will discuss exciting advances in our understanding of how brain cell form connections in development and how those connections are affected in Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Shatz’s work focuses on the visual system, which has relevance not only for perception, but also for disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, and for understanding how the nervous and immune systems interact.

The Mind and Brain Lecture Series is designed to inform the general public about scientific advancements in Neuroscience. Through this unique opportunity, the audience will learn about new discoveries in neuroscience including cutting edge techniques, new computational advancements and brilliant theoretical ideas about how individual cells and complex neural circuits interact to generate the mind. Using these methods, scientists strive to unravel the mysteries of the human brain.
